Dn 7,9-10.13-14; Sal 137; Ap 12, 7-12; Lc 1,26-38
- Carissime sorelle e carissimi fratelli, il Signore vi dia Pace!
Oggi celebriamo la festa dei santi arcangeli Michele, Gabriele e Raffaele, ma il luogo nel quale ci troviamo è particolarmente significativo, perché è dedicato all’arcangelo Gabriele. Angelo significa messaggero e noi veneriamo gli angeli come coloro che ci portano un messaggio importante da parte di Dio. L’arcangelo Gabriele – se stiamo ai racconti dei vangeli – è colui che porta i grandi annunci di Dio che fanno progredire la storia della salvezza.
Gabriele è colui che annuncia all’anziano sacerdote Zaccaria che sua moglie Elisabetta avrà un figlio, che si chiamerà Giovanni. Zaccaria non crede a questo annuncio e rimane muto per nove mesi, il tempo necessario perché il bambino preannunciato possa nascere. Quel bambino è il precursore del Messia, colui che deve preparargli la strada.
- Gabriele si reca anche dalla Vergine Maria, questa giovane donna di Nazareth, per annunciarle che diventerà la madre del Salvatore. A differenza di Zaccaria, Maria si fida dell’angelo, si fida della proposta che Dio le fa attraverso l’angelo, e così accade che in lei la Parola di Dio si fa carne e può dare al mondo Gesù, che porta nel nome la propria missione, quella di salvarci dai nostri peccati.
- Ogni volta che anche noi ci troviamo ad ascoltare la parola di Dio è come se un angelo ci parlasse. E ogni volta che ci mettiamo di fronte alla parola di Dio dobbiamo verificare se siamo increduli come Zaccaria o se abbiamo il cuore aperto alla parola di Dio come Maria. Se siamo increduli la parola di Dio si realizza comunque, ma noi restiamo muti, non riusciamo a gustare pienamente quel dono fino a quando non si realizza. Se invece ci fidiamo allora la parola di Dio comincia subito a trasformare anche la nostra vita, come è successo a Maria. Se ci fidiamo della parola di Dio allora come Maria sperimentiamo l’azione dello Spirito Santo dentro di noi, sperimentiamo la presenza di Gesù dentro di noi, sentiamo che la parola di Dio ci porta verso chi ha bisogno di aiuto e di salvezza (come Maria che va in fretta da Elisabetta), sentiamo dentro una gioia incontenibile che ci fa esultare e cantare.
- Chiediamo questa sera una grazia semplice e speciale, la grazia di saper ascoltare la voce degli angeli mettendoci in ascolto della parola di Dio. L’arcangelo Gabriele continua a portarci la parola di Dio, continua a parlarci di Gesù, continua a suggerirci di accoglierlo come Salvatore, continua a chiederci di avere fede per riconoscere attraverso i miracoli di ogni giorno che nulla è impossibile a Dio.
- Di fronte alla parola che Gabriele ci annuncia, diciamo anche noi con fede: “Eccomi, voglio mettermi a servizio del Signore, la sua Parola si incarni e si realizzi anche in me”. Amen

Dear Brothers and Sisters,
- May the Lord give you His Peace!
To-day we celebrate the feast of the Holy Archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, but the place in which we find ourselves is particularly significant, because it is dedicated to the Archangel Gabriel. Angel means messenger and we venerate angels as those who bring us an important message from God. The archangel Gabriel - if we go by the gospel stories - is the one who brings God's great announcements that make the history of salvation progress.
Gabriel is the one who announces to the elderly priest Zechariah that his wife Elizabeth will have a son, who will be called John. Zechariah does not believe this announcement and remains silent for nine months, the time necessary for the announced child to be born. That child is the precursor of the Messiah, the one who must prepare the way for Him.
- Gabriel also visits the Virgin Mary, this young woman from Nazareth, to announce to her that she will become the mother of the Saviour. Unlike Zechariah, Mary trusts the angel, she trusts the proposal that God makes to her through the angel, and so it happens that in her the Word of God becomes flesh and can give the world Jesus, who bears in His name His actual mission, that of saving us from our sins.
- Every time we find ourselves listening to the word of God it is as if an angel spoke to us. Every time we put ourselves in front of the word of God we must check whether we are incredulous like Zechariah or whether we have an open heart to the word of God like Mary. If we are incredulous, the word of God comes true anyway, but we remain silent, we are unable to fully enjoy that gift until it comes true. If, however, we trust, then the word of God immediately begins to transform our lives too, as happened to Mary. If we trust the word of God then like Mary we experience the action of the Holy Ghost within us, we experience the presence of Jesus within us, we feel that the word of God leads us towards those in need of help and salvation (like Mary who goes quickly to Elisabeth), we feel an uncontainable joy inside that makes us rejoice and sing.
- This evening we ask for a simple and special grace, the grace of knowing how to listen to the voice of the angels by listening to the word of God. The Archangel Gabriel continues to bring us the Word of God, continues to speak to us about Jesus, continues to suggest to us to welcoming Him as Saviour continues to ask us to have faith to recognize through everyday miracles that nothing is impossible for God.
- Faced with the word that Gabriel announces to us, we too say with faith: "Here I am, I want to put myself at the service of the Lord, may His Word be incarnated and realized in me too". Amen.
