1. A tutte le Autorità qui convenute desidero rivolgere un cordiale saluto a nome della Custodia di Terra Santa ed esprimere un ringraziamento per la loro presenza e per il supporto dato alla realizzazione del Youth Development Resource Center Good Shepherd Club, collegato anche all’altra importante opera sociale della nostra Parrocchia che è la Scuola di Terra Santa di Gerico.
Benvenuti e grazie a:
Il Direttore responsabile della Missione di USAID Mr. Jonathan Kamin, e lo staff di ANERA e IRAX già da qualche anno operano qui a Gerico;
Il signor Basem Abedrabbo, Chairman of Board Good Shepherd Club, che ora inauguriamo;
Il Parroco di Gerico p. Mario Adchiti, che assieme a fr. Anthony Sejda cura la nostra presenza francescana e anima la vita della Parrocchia con le sue varie opere qui in Gerico.
2. Permettetemi ora di illustrare brevemente il valore di quest’opera sociale.
Chiediamoci: perché è importante la realizzazione di un centro sportivo, educativo e culturale capace di offrire corsi di musica, computer, lingue, ed altro ancora?
Già il termine che descrive questo centro ce lo spiega, si tratta di un Centro di Risorse per lo Sviluppo dei Giovani (Youth Development Resource Center).
Questo luogo è quindi una possibilità e una risorsa offerta ai giovani di Gerico perché sviluppino e facciano crescere le potenzialità presenti dentro la loro persona.
Proviamo a delineare prima il valore educativo dello sport e poi quello della cultura.
Sappiamo quanto lo sport possa fare per aiutare i giovani a esprimere in varie direzioni le loro potenzialità:
La prima direzione è quella della crescita personale attraverso l’allenamento e l’esercizio che non è mai solo allenamento ed esercizio fisico, ma è sempre anche allenamento a superare se stessi e i propri limiti ed è esercizio a esprimere tutte le potenzialità che si trovano dentro la propria persona, accettando la fatica e l’impegno come via al raggiungimento dei propri obiettivi di miglioramento.
La seconda direzione è quella della collaborazione che si apprende soprattutto quando pratichiamo sport di squadra. È qualcosa di molto importante educare alla disciplina di squadra, educare alla cooperazione, all’accettarsi reciprocamente, educare alla fiducia reciproca e al sostenersi gli uni gli altri per raggiungere insieme un obiettivo comune. Anche questa direzione di crescita è molto importante perché ci ricorda che lo sport è una scuola di convivenza.
3. Il Centro che inauguriamo è prezioso non solo per l’offerta sportiva ma anche per l’offerta culturale ed educativa che offre nel suo insieme. Educare significa proprio aiutare la persona, specialmente i giovani, a far emergere le loro capacità e i talenti che hanno ricevuto. Educare attraverso la cultura vuol dire aiutare a migliorare la propria sensibilità e la propria capacità di cogliere ed esprimere la bellezza dell’arte come ad esempio la musica. Educare attraverso la cultura significa ancora offrire ai giovani strumenti che li aiutino a migliorare le proprie capacità perché abbiano più possibilità di inserirsi nella società da protagonisti, offrendo così il proprio contributo alla crescita e allo sviluppo del proprio Paese. Educare attraverso la cultura significa aiutare i giovani a coltivare quell’apertura verso il mondo intero che oggi l’informatica e lo studio delle lingue favoriscono. Educare significa aiutare i giovani a orientare verso il bene personale ed il bene comune tutte le proprie capacità, la propria libertà e la propria volontà. Un centro educativo e culturale è perciò un’opera di grande valore per una comunità, è un dono prezioso da accogliere con gratitudine, da far crescere con responsabilità, di cui prendersi cura con passione.
4. A nome della Custodia di Terra Santa desidero augurare a tutti i giovani che frequenteranno questo centro sportivo, educativo e culturale di saper cogliere questa occasione che viene loro offerta per crescere in modo armonioso e completo.
Desidero augurare anche a tutti coloro che avranno il compito e l’onore di servire in questo Centro, a partire dai miei confratelli, di saper educare a questi valori. In particolare auguro agli educatori di sapersi ispirare alla figura del Buon Pastore che ci insegna a saper andare alla ricerca della pecorella perduta. Ecco mi pare che sia importante che gli educatori sappiano accogliere i giovani che qui verranno ma sappiano anche andare a cercare i giovani che hanno bisogno di ciò che questo centro offre per la loro crescita. E mi pare importante che gli educatori sappiano coinvolgere quelli che frequenteranno questo centro, in modo tale che nessuno si senta escluso o scartato, ma tutti si possano sentire importanti e valorizzati, anche quelli che hanno meno capacità, anche quelli che fanno più fatica, anche quelli che sembrano più fragili.
A nome della Custodia di Terra Santa, grazie ancora a tutti coloro che hanno reso possibile la realizzazione di questo centro e tanti auguri a tutti coloro che lo gestiranno e ne beneficeranno, sappiate farne buon uso.

1. I would like to extend my cordial greetings in the name of the Custody of the Holy Land to all the Authorities gathered for this occasion, and I would like to express my thanks for their presence and for the support given to the realisation of the Youth Development Resource Centre Good Shepherd Club, which is also linked to the other important social work of our Parish which is the Terra Sancta School in Jericho.
Welcome and thanks to:
- 3. The Centre we are inaugurating is precious not only for what it offers in sports, but also for what it offers in the holistic aspects of culture and education. To educate means precisely to help the human person, especially young people, to bring out and emerge the abilities and talents they have received. To educate through culture means to help to develop one’s sensibility and ability to accept and express the beauty of art, for example, the beauty of music. To educate through culture means also to offer to young people those instruments which help them to develop their abilities so that they can have more possibilities to insert themselves in society as protagonists, and thus to offer their contribution to the growth and progress of their own Country. To educate through culture means to help young people to cultivate that openness to the entire world, which nowadays the mass media and the study of languages are favouring. To educate means to help young people to orientate their abilities, their freedom and their will towards their personal good and towards the common good. An educational and cultural centre is thus an initiative of great value for a community, it is a precious gift that we should welcome with gratitude, and help to make grow with responsibility and take care of it with passion.
4. In the name of the Custody of the Holy Land I would like to extend my best wishes to all the young people who will come to this centre for sports, education and culture, so that they can make the best of this occasion that is being offered to them to grow in a more harmonious and complete way.
I would like to wish to all those who will have the duty and the honour to serve in this Centre, starting with my brothers, to know how to educate young people to these values. In particular I extend my best wishes to the educators so that they will know how to be inspired by the figure of the Good Shepherd, who teaches us how to go out and search for the lost sheep. It seems to me to be important that the educators should know how to welcome the young people who come here, but also that they should go and search for those young people who are in need of what this centre can offer for their growth. For me it is important that the educators should know how to involve those who will frequent this centre, in such a way that nobody will feel excluded or left aside, but all can feel important and valued, even those who have less abilities, even those who have to make a greater effort, and even those who seem to be most fragile.
In the name of the Custody of the Holy Land, thanks once more to all those who have made it possible to realise this centre. My best wishes to all those who will be its leaders and who will benefit from it. May you know how to make a good use of this Centre.

2. Permit me now to illustrate briefly the value of this social initiative. We ask: why is it so important to have a centre for sports, education and culture, which is capable of offering courses of music, computer, languages and other things besides?
The name which describes this centre and explains it is clear. It is a Youth Development Resource Centre. This place is therefore a possibility and a resource offered to the young people of Jericho, so that they develop the potential present in their persons and make them grow.
Let us try to underline first the educative value of sports and afterwards that of culture.
We know how much sports can help young people to express their potentialities in various directions: - The first direction is that of personal growth through training and exercise, which is never solely a physical exercise, but is also a training to go beyond oneself and one’s limits. It is an exercise that expresses all the potentialities that are found in one’s person, while accepting the fatigue and commitment that go into reaching one’s objectives towards a better life style.
- The second direction is that of the collaboration that is learnt especially when we practice sports in a team spirit. It is very important to educate young people to the discipline of a team spirit, to educate them to cooperate, to accept one another, to educate them to reciprocal trust and to mutual sustaining in order to reach together a common objective. This direction of growing up is very important because it reminds us that sports is a school of the art of living together.
- The third direction is that of loyal competition with due respect to the others and with respect to the rules. Sport reminds us that the dimension of collaboration and that of competition do not exclude one another. However, competition must also be made with a sense of respect to others, who in sports are adversaries but not enemies. In sports the adversary helps us to grow precisely because he or she obliges us to confront ourselves with him or her. Collaboration makes us grow, but also competition aids our growth when it is healthy, because the other person becomes the one who helps us to develop ourselves precisely because we are obliged to confront ourselves and compete with others. Besides this, competition in sports should teach us respect of the rules, and above all the rule of loyalty. Those who win without respecting the rules of the game, those who win by cheating or swindling, are in fact losers and they make sports lose. On the other hand, whoever wins by respecting the rules helps others to appreciate the value of a loyal competition which, at the end of the day, makes everyone grow, even those who did not win, but who have helped themselves to live a better life thanks to a loyal competition.

- The (responsible of) USAID Deputy Mission Director Mr. Jonathan Kamin, and the staff of ANERA and IRAX that have been working here in Jericho already for some time;
- Mr. Basem Abedrabbo, Chairman of the Board of the Good Shepherd Club, which we will now inaugurate;
- The Parish priest of Jericho, Fr. Mario Adchiti, who together with br. Anthony Sejda takes care of our Franciscan presence and animates the life of the Parish with its various initiatives here in Jericho.
