Assunzione della Beata Vergine Maria - 15 Agosto 2026

Omelia del Custode di Terra Santa, Fr. Francesco Ielpo

Dear brothers and sisters,

today the Church invites us to contemplate the fulfillment of Mary's life. The Assumption is not an isolated privilege; it is the mature fruit of a life entirely entrusted to God. Today we see the completion of her vocation: she who said her "Yes"at Nazareth now enters fully into the glory of her Son.

The first reading presents the great battle between the Woman and the Dragon. It is the same battle that runs throughout the whole history of salvation: on one side stand power, pride, and death; on the other, humility, faith, and life. Saint Paul, in the second reading, presents the same contrast through Adam and Christ: in Adam reign sin and death; in Christ reign life and resurrection. And in the Gospel, Mary's Magnificat proclaims once more this astonishing reversal: God casts down the mighty from their thrones, lifts up the lowly, and fills the hungry with good things.

Mary chose where she would stand. She chose the path of faith. Not the easiest path, but the truest one. A journey that began with her fiat at Nazareth, continued through the silence of Bethlehem, the exile into Egypt, the hidden years of Nazareth, the sorrow of Calvary, and the perseverance of the Upper Room. Saint John Paul II described this as a "great and heroic faith," because Mary continued to believe even when everything seemed to contradict the promise she had received.

For this reason, the Assumption is not simply Mary's reward; it is the fulfillment of God's promise. The One who called her remained faithful to the very end. The angel had said to her: "The Lord is with you." And indeed, the Lord remained with her throughout her entire life, until He brought her into the fullness of eternal glory.

Dear brothers and sisters, today's celebration takes on an even deeper meaning because during this Eucharist Brother Claude will make his first religious profession.

Like Mary, everything begins with a call. God has spoken a word that has changed his life. Today, before the Church, he will respond with his own "Here I am," promising to live the Gospel according to the way of life of Saint Francis, in poverty, chastity, and obedience.

At the end of his profession, I will pronounce one of the most beautiful formulas in the Church's liturgy for religious profession:

"And I, in the name of the Church, if you observe these things faithfully until death, promise you eternal life."

These are not merely words of encouragement. They are the Church's promise, founded upon the faithfulness of God Himself. It is the very promise fulfilled today in the Blessed Virgin Mary. She remained faithful until the end. She never took back what she had freely offered to God. And today we contemplate her in heavenly glory as the living proof that God always keeps His promises.

Brother Claude, your profession is not directed only toward this day. It already points to its final fulfillment. Today we celebrate not simply the beginning of your religious life, but the beginning of a journey whose destination is holiness, full communion with God, and that eternal life which we now behold accomplished in Mary.

The Assumption reminds us that vocation is not primarily about doing something for God. It is about allowing Him to lead us day after day with the same trust with which Mary pronounced her fiat. She did not know every step of the journey that awaited her. She knew only one thing: the Lord was with her. And that was enough.

The same is true for every consecrated person. We do not know where the Lord will lead us, what trials we shall face, or what crosses we shall carry. But we do know that the One who calls us walks beside us and will bring to completion the work He has begun.

Today, as we accompany Brother Claude at the beginning of his Franciscan journey, let us entrust him to the maternal intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. May she, who lived her consecration to the fullest and now enjoys its fruit in the glory of heaven, teach him to renew his "yes" every day, until the day when the promise spoken by the Church today will become a reality for him:

"If you observe these things faithfully until death, I promise you eternal life."
