A new organ will make religious functions even more solemn at the Moses Memorial on Mount Nebo. The instrument, a fine work of craftsmanship by organ maker, Nicola Puccinidi from Pisa, was donated to the Custody of the Holy Land by a benefactor, also from Pisa, specifically for the Sanctuary of Mount Nebo. Small and transportable, this organ is currently the only pipe organ in all of Jordan and it has been included in the Terra Sancta Organ Festival program.
On Saturday, August 22, 2015, the organ was blessed at the Basilica of San Piero a Grado (Pisa), during the Eucharistic celebration presided over by Mons. Maroun Lahham, the bishop of Amman, Vicar of the Latin Patriarchate for Jordan, who was specially invited for the occasion. The Archbishop of Pisa H.E. Mons. Giovanni Paolo Benotto, as well as the rector of the basilica, Fr. Antoni Pyznar, along with other priests, also participated in the mass. The Custody of the Holy Land was represented by its music director Br. Riccardo Ceriani.
The ancient Pisan Basilica of San Piero a Grado is the place where—according to tradition— St. Peter disembarked in Italy: for this reason the people who coordinated the shipping, decided to have the organ depart for the Holy Land from this very place.
During the homily, Bishop Maroun Lahham recalled that Jordan is part of the Holy Land: This explains the meaning of the gift for Mount Nebo, which he considers the “most important shrine in Jordan.”
For his part, the Archbishop of Pisa, Giovanni Paolo Benotto, stressed the importance of organ music for the liturgy, expressing his satisfaction with the fact that a Pisan instrument will be placed at the sanctuary of Mount Nebo, and, similar to its expansive view from atop the mountain, the sound it will produce can spread all over the Holy Land.
After the religious service, Antonio Galanti and Andrea Lagi, performed in an organ and trumpet concert duo, as a preview of the 2015 Terra Sancta Organ Festival that on Friday, September 18, will be unveiled along with the same organ in the church of the Terra Sancta College in Amman, the Jordanian capital.
