At the request of H.E. Giuseppe Lazzarotto, Apostolic Delegate for Jerusalem and Palestine, the Custody of the Holy Land has loaned an item from its patrimonial collection of art to be the background for the meeting between Pope Francis and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. During this meeting at the Apostolic Delegation on the Mount of Olives on Sunday, to take place on May 25th, the two will sign a joint declaration. The Blessed Virgin Mary will preside over the meeting.
That is, the painting that will be shown is an Annunciation by Francesco De Mura. Measuring 124 cm x 179 cm (49” x 70”), the work is one of four that make up the Cycle of the Virgin, which is usually displayed at Saint Catherine ad Nativitatem Church in Bethlehem. Francesco De Mura, an artist of the Neapolitan School of the 18th century, was active primarily in Naples and Turin. His works can be seen today at the Louvre, in Cambridge and in Chicago.
This is a great satisfaction to the Custody of the Holy Land and its Office of Cultural Property, which is responsible for the conservation and valuation of the works of the Franciscans of the Holy Land. This baroque painting was restored during 2012 and 2013 thanks to the benefactor and gallery owner Maurizio Canesso. It was also part of the “Treasures of the Holy Sepulchre” exhibition that took place at the Versailles palace and the Maison de Chateaubriand in Chatenay-Malabr
