Ordained deacons at Saint Saviour’s church

Amid Christmas festivities, the Franciscans of the Custody and the members of the Hebrew-speaking Catholic community gathered on December 27 to attend the diaconal ordination of Brother Alessandro Coniglio OFM (an Italian Franciscan from the Custody of the Holy Land) and Roman Kaminski (a Polish man ordained for the Hebrew-speaking Catholic curacy).

His Beatitude Patriarch Fouad Twal, the principal concelebrant, was assisted by Msgr. Boutros Marcuzzo, assistant bishop in Israel, and Brother Pierbattista Pizzaballa from the Custody of the Holy Land, as well as about fifty priests. There were numerous people in attendance.

On this day of troubling events in Gaza, Arab and Jewish Christians as well as foreign residents of Jerusalem all prayed together.
In his homily, His Beatitude the Patriarch specifically addressed the two future deacons telling them, "Do not be afraid! Commit to obeying the Word of the One who called you. We cannot follow Him or live on this earth without carrying His cross. But do not be afraid; He is with you as He promised."
The order of ordination and the laying of hands as well as the prayers of consecration followed the homily. When the order was concluded, the two friars put on their diaconal vestments. Roman was assisted by Franciscan friar Apolinary Szwed and the priest of the Hebrew-speaking parish in Jerusalem, while Alessandro was assisted by Brother Guillermo and Brother José, who were ordained as deacons last June.
The two new deacons, who up until that point had been situated among the faithful, took their places at the altar where they served the mass.

After the celebration, everyone was invited to congratulate the new deacons in the “Immaculata” Hall, where refreshments and snacks were waiting for them.
