A New Minister General for the Order of Friars Minor

Wednesday, 22 May 2013, Rome. Michael Anthony Perry today was elected Minister General of the Order of Friars Minor. The office has been vacant since April sixth, when it was announced that Pope Francis had appointed Fra Jose Rodriguez Carballo to the position of Secretary of the Congregation for Institutes of Religious Life and Societies of Apostolic Life.

Mgr. Carballo, since assuming his new position, was ordained bishop on Saturday, May 18th at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Spain, by Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, Secretary of State of the Holy See.

Fra Michael Anthony Perry was born in Indianapolis (USA) in 1954. He made his solemn profession in the Order of Friars Minor in 1981, and was ordained priest in 1984.
Before his election as Vicar General and Procurer of the Order, he was the provincial minister of Sacred Heart of Jesus Province in the US. There, too, he earned a doctorate in theological anthropology and worked for Catholic Relief Services (CRS), the international humanitarian agency of the Conference of American Bishops. He also spent ten years on mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
