The Missionary Daughters of Calvary

Jerusalem, 10th March 2011

Yesterday afternoon, the Mother Superior General of the Missionary Daughters of Calvary Sisters, Sister Maria Edith Martìnez Tapia, visited the Father Custos. The “Missionary Daughters of Calvary” Sisters are an order that was founded in 1885 in Mexico City and recognized with a Pontifical Decree on 14th March 1909. The order was founded by the two sisters Marià Ernestina and Maria Enriqueta who, together with the co-founder, the Franciscan Father Manuel Marìa Ortiz, in the late 19th century in a climate of religious persecution, became organized in a congregation that externally looked like a philanthropic charity, but concealed genuine active missionary and contemplative work for the poorest and the sick. Since February 1922, the congregation has been present in Jerusalem, on the wishes of one of the founders, Maria Ernestina, to be a praying presence near the Calvary, where the Passion of the Redeemer was consumed. The Order is present in four continents: the Americas, Europe, Asia and Africa. The General House is in Rocca di Papa (Rome).
