The Magnificat Custody Choir will sing at the ecumenical meeting at the Holy Sepulcher

The MAGNIFICAT CUSTODY CHOIR was chosen to sing the chants of the Latin tradition at the Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher during the ecumenical meeting that will take place to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the historic meeting held in Jerusalem between Pope Paul VI and the Patriarch Athenagoras I.

During the celebration, the choir will perform 4 chants, all related to the Easter liturgy and to the liturgy of the Holy Sepulcher. The proclamation of the Gospel will be introduced by the Easter Sunday Alleluia and followed by the sequence Victimae paschali laudes. When Pope Francis and the Patriarch Bartholomew I will enter the Holy Sepulchre, the choir will sing the hymn Aurora caelum purpurat, that is sang everyday by the minor friars of the Custody of The Holy Land when the daily procession reaches the Edicule of the Anastasis.

Once they exit the tomb and give the blessing, Pope Francis and the Patriarch Bartholomew will walk to the Calvary: at this moment the choir will sing the ancient hymn of the 6th century that is always chanted by processions during the ascent to Calvary: Vexilla regis prodeunt.

THE MAGNIFICAT CUSTODY CHOIR will be positioned in the space that is above the Chapel of Saint Mary Magdalene, where the console of the organ is positioned, in the sector under the responsibility of the Custody of the Holy Land, the Franciscan Minor Friars who have been supervising all celebrations of Latin rite in the Holy Sepulcher by mandate of the Holy See.

Because of the small size of the space allocated and for security reasons, the choir will be composed of only 30 singers. THE MAGNIFICAT CUSTODY CHOIR will be conducted by Mrs. Hania Soudah Sabbara and accompanied at the organ by Fr. Armando Pierucci, titular organist of the Holy Sepulcher and founder of the Magnificat Institute that he chairs since 1995.

THE MAGNIFICAT CUSTODY CHOIR is the choir of the Custody of the Holy Land that sings in the main liturgical solemnities officiated by the Franciscan friars. The singers belong to the Christian community that is made up of locals and people of other nationalities living in Jerusalem. The majority of the singers have grown up musically at the Magnificat Institute, the music school of the Custody of the Holy Land that is responsible of the choir’s activity and training.
