Lavina and the miracle at Easter

Yes, Lavina, a young Indian woman from Mengalore, in the south of India, was miraculously saved at Easter. She fell from the fifth floor of a building, whilst she was cleaning the windows. She fell five floors because she made a wrong movement and landed on the ground but, as she says, she was not afraid as she fell. She felt the Lord very near her. He accompanied her in her fall. She lay on the grass in the garden for more than half an hour because the window she fell from was at the back of the building. She could not move and, in great pain, she tried to use her mobile phone to get help, but her arms were broken and she could not move. At last, some neighbours noticed her lying on the ground and, recognizing her, immediately called an ambulance. Taken to hospital, she was operated on. As well as her arms, she also broke her legs. But, thanks to God, no vital organ was damaged.

I met her at the Tel Hashomer Hospital, surrounded by the affection of her fellow countrymen. I visited her whilst a friend of hers was combing her hair, as though combing a little girl’s hair. I gave her Holy Communion. She only thanked the Lord for having protected her with such care, for having watched over her and saved her. With her deep black and luminous eyes and her thick raven-black hair, she looks strong and full of vitality.

She wants to live and continue to work for her husband and two children who are waiting for her in India and who depend on her work to survive.

The Indian Konkani-speaking community has been very close to her: praying and with the concrete help of a collection of donations for her needs. For the long time she will be unable to work, she will need every shekel to live and to keep helping her family.

I ask her if I can take a photo of her. She accepts happily and tries to find a position where she looks “less like an invalid”. She opens her arms and on her right arm there is the unmistakable and indelible mark of the cross. A small, great Indian woman and woman of faith.
