The Knights of the Holy Sepulchre meet the Magnificat

15th October 2011

The Knights of the Holy Sepulchre of the Swiss Lieutenancy had fixed the date of the concert of the Magnificat Institute a few years ago, for the end of their pilgrimage in the Holy Land: 15th October 2011. Switzerland has been greatly supportive of the Magnificat for some time now: for example, the Swiss Commissariat of the Holy Land dedicated the 2009 Lent Collection to the Magnificat; there is an Association of the Friends of the Magnificat in Switzerland (www.Amicimagnificat.ch), which sponsored the journey to Switzerland of the Yasmeen and Magnificat Choirs of the Custody of the Holy Land to record and produce two CDs with sacred songs in Arabic and since 2010 it has supported the Piano Competition now named after Nikolaus de la Flue, the emblematic saint of Switzerland, organizing a Swiss tour for the winners.

The Knights of the Holy Sepulchre, with the active support of the Latin Patriarchate, now wanted to hear the students and the choirs of the Magnificat in the Holy City, in the Basilica of St. Stephen, the church of the Dominicans of the Ecole Biblique et Archéologique Française, the usual venue of ecumenical and interfaith meetings and they presented them to a huge audience: Bishops and Clergy of the various Christian confessions, including the Bishop of Lugano who is their Great Prior, Mons. Pierregiacomo Grampa; authorities, figures from the world of culture and from the high society of Jerusalem. Once again the event was organized by Véronique Nebel, President of the Friends of the Magnificat as well as Dame of the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre, who is also very active and well known in Jerusalem for the annual ecumenical initiatives of prayer. The young concert performers of violin and flute, accompanied at the piano by Tatyana Yourovsky, and piano, were not overwhelmed by the very large audience who, in a moving silence, listened to them, but gave the best of themselves, interpreting their pieces with perfect and self-confident pitch.

The Yasmeen Choir and the Magnificat Choir of the Custody of the Holy Land, conducted by Hania Soudah Sabbara and accompanied by Jiries Boullata (piano) and Father Armando Pierucci (organ), were enthusiastically received by the public, performing Oriental folksongs and some of the sacred songs already on the CDs recorded two years ago in Switzerland. There was particular appreciation for the Prayer of the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre, set to music for the occasion by Father Armando Pierucci; Dr. Christa Von Siemens, Member of the Grand Magisterium of the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre, asked for an encore, promising to circulate it internationally: will it become the official anthem of the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre?

At the end, the Bishop H.E. Mons. William Shomali and Lieutenant Jean-Pierre De Gluz Rüchti, giving a generous donation to the Magnificat, expressed their appreciation, pleased to see that their support for the Church of the Holy Land is not in vain.
