In Jerusalem, A Requiem Mass for Archbishop Pietro Sambi

The Holy Land wished to remember Archbishop Pietro Sambi, who died in the United States on July 27th. And so, a Requiem Mass concelebrated at the Latin Patriarchate in Jerusalem, was attended by many of the faithful as well as clergy who had known him when he was Nuncio here in Jerusalem, as well in the Palestinian Territories between 1998 and 2005.

"A true pastor: credible and joyful ... exceptionally articulate, an Archbishop who truly loved the Holy Land and who gave it much." This moving tribute was made by the Latin Patriarch, Fouad Twal, who in his homily also recalled the pilgrimage made by Blessed John Paul to the Holy Land in the Jubilee Year of 2000; a visit prepared with unusual care and commitment by Archbishop Sambi, who fearlessly denounced injustice and who worked tirelessly for peace. The Patriarch also remembered the role placed by the Archbishop during the siege of the Basilica of the Nativity in Bethlehem in 2002.
