Inauguration of the new sports centre at the Terra Sancta College, Amman

Jerusalem, 1st June 2011

The inauguration ceremony of the Terra Sancta College’s new sports centre took place in Amman on 7th May.

The long history of the college starts in Amman in the difficult year of 1948, when some Franciscan friars took the first group of young diploma-holders from Jerusalem there so that they could continue their studies. That marked the start of the educational challenge and in the past 63 years, the college has seen an increase in its services and continuous improvement in its academic standards. Today there are 1172 students enrolled in the college, which shows the validity of the syllabuses offered by this establishment.

The new sports centre is the result of a year of work: the facilities now include a gym, well-equipped outdoor sports grounds and a garage for cars.

In his inauguration speech, Father Rachid Mistrih expressed the wish that this project can create a generation aware of the importance of sport and launch new talents. The sports centre, as well as being the venue for the school’s activities, will also be at the service of the community and other bodies.

It was a well-prepared ceremony, with the college choir, the scouts, a group of Dabké dancers and exhibitions by the college’s sports teams.

About 600 people attended the ceremony. Along with guests, parents and pupils there was also the Minister of Education Dr. Tayseer Al-Naeemeh, the director of special education, Salwa Abu Matar, the coordinator of physical education in the college, Ramzi Rustum, Monsignor Noujem and other friars and nuns.

Amongst the technical supervisors of the project, many people were remembered in the thanks: the consultant engineer, Mr. George Zabaneh, the works manager, Maher Ghannam and his assistants, the engineers Nabil Ceyhan and Jihad Shkerian, lastly, Mr. Zaid Dababneh, in charge of maintenance.
