In the footsteps of Father Michele Piccirillo

A journey to Jordan, Palestine and Israel to remember Father Michele Piccirillo, renowned Biblical scholar and archaeologist of the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum of the Custody of the Holy Land who passed away recently: “In the footsteps of Father Michele Piccirillo”.

The Town Council of Montevarchi, two years after the death of Father Michele Piccirillo, wishes to remember him by organizing a trip “in his footsteps”, with the collaboration of the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum of Jerusalem and of the ATS pro Terra Sancta, the NGO of the Custody of the Holy Land. Father Michele became famous all over the world in particular for his activity as an archaeologist principally in connection with the excavations on Mount Nebo in Jordan. His life, which came to an end on 26th October, 2008, was marked by a continuous commitment to historical and archaeological research which made him a reference for all scholars of the Holy Land. He was the heir of the Franciscan tradition in the field of Palestinology, marked by the great figures of Father Bellarmino Bagatti and Father Virgilio Corbo. Taking advantage of the modern means of divulgation, he was able to bring to the attention of the world both to the issues linked with his studies, carried out in the tormented Israeli-Palestinian territories, and to his excavation campaigns, which always gave decisive results, arousing the enthusiasm and involvement of a large number of collaborators, both young people and professionals. He opened schools of restoration in Jericho and Madaba and was able to obtain the support of the institutions to fund his research and studies. He was at his ease whether speaking to politicians or the Bedouins in the desert. Thanks to collaboration with several publishers, such as San Paolo, Jaca Book, Velar and Edizioni Dehoniane, he left an enormous amount of work behind him through all his publications which are as numerous as his excavations.

For Montevarchi, Father Michele was not just the “great” archaeologist of the Holy Land: he was a friend to the whole community. With his friendship and his affection, he helped and supported the twinning of Montevarchi, Pratovecchio and Bethlehem.
The Mayor, Giorgio Valentini, in remembering Father Michele said: “The man of stones and faith; his passing away will encourage us even more to promote the values of peace and solidarity between peoples as well as to keep the promises made when the towns were twinned.”
