Fifty years ago, with the Second Vatican Council in full force, Pope Paul VI gave Christianity the first meeting between the leader of Western Christians and the leader of Eastern Christians, Patriarch Athenagoras, since the Great Schism of 1054.
During the Summer Chapter of 2013, the Custody of the Holy Land decided to organize a commemoration of this pilgrimage that, more than a moving gesture, was a testimony of openness to other cultures and an invitation to the entire Church to look to its roots.
The commission that was appointed chose to mount an exhibition that brings together archival images and testimonies, as well as objects from that time (liturgical ornaments, presents from Paul VI…). Composted of fourteen panels, the exposition will be presented in various holy places at the sites Paul VI visited.
The Christian Information Center at Jaffa Gate will receive the panels that naturally or politically cannot be placed in the sanctuaries (the Cenacle, the Holy Sepulchre and the ecumenical encounters). The entire exhibition will be open to the public until the end of June at the Curia of Saint Saviour’s Monastery in Jerusalem (at the New Gate).
It is there that on Thursday, March sixth at 5:00 p.m., the exposition will open in the presence of the Custos of the Holy Land, as well as of witnesses to the event. A documentary of archival film that the Franciscans produced to revisit those days from January 1964 will also be shown.
While awaiting the arrival of Pope Francis, who wants his pilgrimage to follow the path taken by his predecessor, the Custody of the Holy Land is happy to be able to invite as many people as possible to take part in a trip through time to meet the great Church builder that was Paul VI.
