The name of Father Michele Piccirillo, who knew the Holy Land very well, is inevitably linked to the archaeological discoveries of Mount Nebo, today an important destination of several pilgrimages in the Holy Land and cultural itineraries. Many people have celebrated his studies and discoveries in Palestine, Jordan and Israel, which testified to the long presence of Christians in this land and their co-existence with Jews and Muslims.
His discoveries rewrote the history of these places, focusing attention on the continuity of the Christian message and its tangibility.
His service to the Custody and his scientific and cultural contribution to the development of the archaeological heritage of the Holy Land and to the history of Christianity were extraordinary.
