Franciscan sisters at St. Saviour’s celebrate 25 years of presence

On 31 May 1981 the Franciscan Sisters of the Heart of Jesus officially initiated their service in Saint Saviour’s Monastery. On 18 May of the same year, 25 years ago, the first eight sisters arrived from Malta. They were sent by their Mother General, Sr. Ines Gauci, upon the explicit request of the Custos Fr. Maurilio Sacchi.

The official invitation had asked the Franciscan Sisters to give their service in Saint Saviour, with the aim of having the responsibility of the Custodial Infirmary, the Male Orphanage and the monastery kitchens. The first superior was Sr. Silvana Sciberras. The only sister who remains from the original group is Sr. Fedelina Galea, who works in the Infirmary.

In order to commemorate this anniversary a Mass of thanksgiving was celebrated on Sunday 25 June, in the church of Saint Saviour. The celebrant was Fr. Artemio Vítores, Custodial Vicar. During his homily Fr. Artemio thanked God for the presence and service of the Franciscan Sisters of the Heart of Jesus in the Holy Land Custody.
The Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of the Heart of Jesus was founded on 15 August 1880 in the island of Gozo, Malta, by Don Giuseppe Diacono and Sr. Margherita De Brincat. Sr. Margherita “del Cuore di Gesù” was, de facto, the foundress of the Congregation after its abandonment by Don Diacono. Her process of beatification is underway at the General Postulation of the Order of Friars Minor. The Congregation is of pontifical right since 1927, and has various houses in Malta and Gozo, Sicily, Bari, Rome (with the General House), Ferrara, London, Corfù, Jerusalem, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Australia, Brazil and the Philippines (Manila).

Today the Franciscan Sisters at Saint Saviour are 5, and they are responsible for the running of the kitchen, collaborate in the running of the Infirmary and in the care of the sacred vestments in the Basilica of the Resurrection.
