A l’invitation du Saint-Père, l’Eglise Catholique, rassemblée le Vendredi Saint pour le mémorial de la Passion douloureuse du Christ, exprime par la prière et la Collecte son soutien à la foi des communautés de Terre Sainte. Le besoin est particulièrement criant, en cette période de crise à laquelle tout le Moyen-Orient est confronté.
Le temps du Carême favorise une méditation pleine d’amour sur les Lieux saints présents à l’origine de notre foi et sur lesquels les premières communautés chrétiennes, suivant le Christ Sauveur du Monde, se sont rassemblées. Saint Paul parle déjà d’eux lorsqu’il exhorte vivement son auditoire à « apporter une contribution pour les plus pauvres » (Cf. Rm 15:25-26; Gal 2:10; 1 Cor 16; 2 Cor 8-9).
Comme les Apôtres, le Pape François a particulièrement à cœur les souffrances de tant de frères et sœurs dans cette partie du monde, un endroit sanctifié par le sang de l’Agneau. « Leur souffrance, aggravée dans les récents mois à cause des hostilités continues de cette région, crie vers Dieu et fait appel à l’engagement de tous, à travers la prière et toutes sortes d’initiatives » (Pape François, Lettre aux Chrétiens du Moyen-Orient, 21 décembre 2014).
Aujourd’hui, des millions de réfugiés fuient la Syrie et l’Irak, où le bruit des armes ne cesse pas, et où la voie du dialogue et de la concorde semble avoir été complétement perdue. A la place, la haine insensée semble prévaloir, avec le désespoir impuissant de ceux qui ont tout perdu et ont été expulsés de la terre de leurs ancêtres.
Si les chrétiens de Terre Sainte sont encouragés à résister, autant que c’est possible, la tentation est de partir. Les fidèles à travers le monde sont donc appelés à prendre leur souffrance à cœur. Ainsi sont concernés les frères en Christ qui appartiennent à diverses confessions : il s’agit d’un oecuménisme de la souffrance qui tend à faire advenir le triomphe de l’unité : « qu’ils soient un ! » (Jn. 17, 21).
Cette année est une occasion encore plus précieuse pour devenir pèlerins de la foi à la suite du Saint-Père qui, en mai 2014, visitait ce coin de terre, si cher aux chrétiens, aux juifs et aux musulmans. C’est une chance de devenir les promoteurs du dialogue au travers de la paix, de la prière et du partage des charges, car « le chemin de la paix est plus sûr si nous comprenons que nous sommes tous de la même souche et membres de la même famille humaine ; si nous n’oublions jamais que nous avons tous le même Père dans les cieux et que nous sommes tous ses enfants, faits à son image et à sa ressemblance. » (Homélie du Pape François au Stade international d’Amman, 24 mai 2014).
Le petit troupeau de chrétiens, répandu à travers le Moyen-Orient est appelé à « promouvoir le dialogue, bâtir des ponts dans l’Esprit des Béatitudes (cf. Mt 5, 3-12), et proclamer l’Evangile de paix » (Lettre aux Chrétiens du Moyen-Orient).
Ce n’est que dans l’unité de l’Esprit et dans une charité fraternelle avec tous les disciples du Christ que l’Eglise, son Epouse, peut témoigner de l’espérance à ses enfants qui vivent quotidiennement les mêmes souffrances que le Seigneur, humilié et abandonné.
Je suis persuadé que la Collecte du Vendredi saint sera accueillie dans toutes les Eglises locales, fruit d’une participation toujours plus grande de solidarité, en coordination avec notre Congrégation, afin de garantir à la Terre Sainte le soutien nécessaire, que ce soit pour les demandes de la vie ecclésiale ou pour les nécessités particulières.

Résumé de la Custodie de Terre-Sainte sur les projets et travaux réalisés en 2013-2014
Depuis plusieurs siècles, la Custodie de Terre Sainte s’est engagée à conserver et donner une nouvelle vie aux Lieux Saints chrétiens sur la terre du Christ. Parmi les différents objectifs de la mission franciscaine, il faut souligner le soutien et le progrès de la minorité chrétienne vivant dans cette région, la conservation et la préoccupation pour les sites archéologiques et les sanctuaires, les liturgies dans les lieux saints, les activités éducatives grâce un réseau d’écoles primaires et secondaires, ainsi que l’accueil des pèlerins.
Pour 2014, la présence franciscaine en Terre Sainte s’est manifestée par la projection, la programmation et l’exécution des projets et travaux suivants :

Jardin des Oliviers
Fin de la restauration, de la maintenance et de l’imperméabilisation du toit de la Basilique, restauration des mosaïques de la coupole et du sol de la Basilique.
Saint-Sépulcre
Continuation des travaux de maintenance habituels
Communauté franciscaine du Cénacle
Réalisation d’un nouveau jardin et d’un espace de célébration pour l’accueil des pèlerins, sur une étendue de 650 m2.
NAZARETH
Basilique de l’Annonciation
Installation de télé-caméras pour les retransmissions en direct des célébrations. Installation d’un nouveau système d’éclairage dans la Basilique.
Projet d’imperméabilisation de la grotte, endommagée par les infiltrations d’eau et l’humidité.
MAGDALA
Ville de Marie-Madeleine
Poursuite des travaux de conservation des sites archéologiques de Magdala, où d’importants reste du port romain de la ville ont été découverts. Nous préparons un itinéraire pour les visites, pour que les pèlerins approfondissent leur connaissance sur la vie quotidienne au temps de Jésus.
CAPHARNAÜM
Site archéologique
Les travaux de conservation du site archéologique sont en bonne voie (Phase 1), avec des travaux dans l’espace ouvert en face de l’église. L’espace a pour but de devenir un lieu pour la prière et la méditation.
Les mosaïques de l’église byzantine sur la maison de Pierre sont en train d’être restaurées.

Lieu de la Transfiguration
Nous sommes en train de travailler sur la réalisation d’un nouveau parking près de l’entrée principale (1250 m2) – Phase 1

Site principal de Sephoris
Lieu reconnu par la tradition comme la maison où Marie a vécu durant son adolescence.
Les travaux de maintenance et de reconstruction du mur extérieur, en partie effondré, ont été terminés.
Récupération fonctionnelle des anciennes pièces et installation d’une nouvelle unité préfabriquée pour l’installation de religieuses du Verbe incarné, gardiennes du sanctuaire.

Eglise du premier miracle
Première phase de réalisation d’un centre paroissial et d’une école, pour répondre aux besoins des paroissiens.
MONT NEBO (Jordanie)
Mémorial de Moïse
Fin du projet de « nouvelle protection du Mémorial de Moïse ». Le projet comprend la réalisation d’un nouveau toit pour la Basilique et un itinéraire d’exposition pour les mosaïques découvertes lors de fouilles. Nous avons en outre achevé la construction d’une nouvelle sacristie, et la réalisation de nouveaux systèmes électriques, mécaniques et de climatisation.

Bourses d’études
Le financement de 295 bourses d’études couvrent une durée de quatre ans, distribuées dans différentes universités : Bethléem, Université hébraïque de Jérusalem, Haïfa, Bir Zeit, Amman, …
Soutien à l’artisanat
Projet de soutien de dix petits artisanats, avec acquisition de pièces détachées, machines de production et autres aides en faveur de la sécurité dans ces activités.
BETHLEEM
Travail du bois d’olivier et de la nacre
Nous avons terminé les travaux pour la production d’objets en bois d’olivier et en nacre. Instauration de leçons pour une formation professionnelle de jeunes palestiniens, afin de garder la tradition d’une fabrication locale.
Activités en faveur des familles
BETHLEEM
Conseil consultatif paroissial des familles. Le travail de soutien du Conseil Consultatif est en cours, afin de soutenir les principaux besoins des familles.
Maison franciscaine pour jeunes gens. Nous continuons le projet visant à aider vingt jeunes garçons âgés de six à douze ans, provenant de familles pauvres ou en situation de difficulté particulière. Outre l’accueil et l’assistance dans les études, les garçons sont suivis par un éducateur, une assistante sociale et un psychologue.
Assistance médicale. Nous poursuivons le projet d’assistance médicale pour les familles en sérieuses difficultés économiques, en couvrant une partie ou la totalité des frais médicaux.
Réfection des maisons. Projets de restauration des maisons où les familles les plus démunies habitent. La restauration se fait par des travailleurs locaux n’ayant pu trouver un emploi. En plus d’aider les familles, cette activité garantie périodiquement des dizaines d’emplois.

Fin des travaux d’extension du cimetière, rajout d’un espace de 700m2 adjacent au cimetière actuel.

Fin des travaux de réalisation d’espaces pour la récréation des enfants de la paroisse de Nazareth.
Appartements pour les plus pauvres et les jeunes couples.
JERUSALEM
Vieille Ville. La phase du projet de restauration des maisons de la Vielle Ville est toujours en cours (45 unités d’habitations ont été restaurées en 2015).
Projet « St James » à Beit-Hanina : projet de construction de six blocs pour un total de 42 appartements répartis sur 3 niveaux
Nous avons obtenu la permission pour la construction de 24 nouveaux appartements.

Projets immobiliers de Jésus-Enfant, Ste Catherine et St François
La maintenance ordinaire et la restructuration des unités de logement dans ces complexes résidentiels sont en cours.
Autres œuvres culturelles
Chaque année, la Custodie de Terre Sainte soutient économiquement la Faculté de Sciences Bibliques et Archéologiques du Studium Biblicum Franciscanum de Jérusalem. Elle délivre 30 bourses d’étude pour des étudiants venus de différents diocèses, pour toute la durée de leurs études.
Christian Media Center. Une nouvelle forme de communication au travers d’un nouveau site internet, avec l’aide des réseaux de télévision, pour diffuser en direct les évènements liturgiques liés à la Terre Sainte.
Œuvres en faveur du Liban et de la Syrie
Outre les travaux projetés et réalisés en Israël et en Palestine, nous avons porté une attention particulière aux chrétiens du Liban et de Syrie, vivant dans une situation d’extrême nécessité.
Appeal for Colletta in support of Christians in the Holy Land
Your Excellency,
At the invitation of the Supreme Pontiffs, the Catholic Church, gathering on Good Friday for the memorial of the sorrowful Passion of Christ, expresses by prayer and by this Collection its support for the faith communities and the sacred places in the Holy Land. The need is particularly felt in this time of crisis, through which the entire region of the Middle East is passing.
The season of Lent favors a meditation full of love for the Holy Places which were present at the origin of our faith and in which the first Christian communities, following Christ, Salus Mundi, were gathered. Already St Paul remembers them, when he warmly exhorts his audience to "to make some contribution for the poor…" (cf. Rm 15:25-26; Gal 2:10; 1 Cor 16; 2 Cor 8-9).
Like the Apostle, so also Pope Francis has particularly at heart the sufferings of so many of our brothers and sisters in this corner of the world, a place made sacred by the Blood of the Lamb. "[Their suffering] aggravated in the past months because of the continuing hostilities in the region … cries out to God and it calls for our commitment to prayer and concrete efforts to help in any way possible." (Pope Francis, Letter to the Christians in the Middle East, 21 December 2014).
Presently, there are millions of refugees fleeing Syria and Iraq, where the roar of arms does not cease and the way of dialogue and concord seems to be completely lost. Senseless hatred seems to prevail instead, along with the helpless desperation of those who have lost everything and have been expulsed from the land of their ancestors.
If the Christians of the Holy Land are encouraged to resist, to the degree possible, the understandable temptation to flee, the faithful throughout the world are asked to take their plight to heart. Also involved are brothers in Christ who belong to various confessions: an ecumenism of blood which points toward the triumph of unity: "ut unum sint"! (Jn 17:21).
This year presents a still more precious opportunity to become pilgrims in faith after the example of the Holy Father, who in May of last year visited this patch of land, so dear to Christians, Jews and Muslims alike. It is a chance to become promoters of dialogue through peace, prayer and sharing of burdens, because "the way of peace is strengthened if we realize that we are all of the same stock and members of the one human family; if we never forget that we have the same Father in heaven and that we are all his children, made in his image and likeness." (Homily of Pope Francis during the Holy Mass at the International Stadium of Amman, 24 May 2014).
The little flock of Christians, spread throughout the Middle East is called "to promote dialogue, to build bridges in the spirit of the Beatitudes (cf. Mt 5:3:12), and to proclaim the Gospel of peace..." (Ibid., Letter to Christians in the Middle East).
Only in the unity of the Spirit and in fraternal charity with all disciples of Christ, can the Church, His Spouse, bear witness to hope before her children who daily live the same sufferings of the Lord, humiliated and abandoned.
I trust that the Good Friday Collection will be welcomed by all of the local Churches, resulting in an ever greater participation in the solidarity coordinated by our Congregation in order to guarantee the Holy Land with necessary support, both for the demands of ordinary ecclesial life and for particular necessities.
To You, to your closest Collaborators, particularly priests and religious men and women, as well as to all the faithful, I express the deepest gratitude of the Holy Father Francis and of this Dicastery, together with that of the Churches in the Land of Christ, for your generous attention and heartfelt response which will make successful this year’s Collecta pro Terra Sancta.

Summary Report of the Custody of the Holy Land on projects and works made with the collection 2013/2014
For many centuries the Custody of the Holy Land has comitted itself to conserve and give new life to the Holy Places of Christianity in the Land of Jesus and in the other countries of the Middle East. Among the various objectives of the Franciscan mission, we mention the support and progress of the Christian minority that lives in these regions, the conservation and cherishing of the archaeological areas and shrines, the interventions in cases of emergencies, the liturgies in the places of cult, the educative and formative activities through a net of elementary and secondary schools, and the assistance to pilgrims. Even in the year 2014, the Franciscan presence in the Holy Land has manifested itself through the projection, programming and execution of the following projects and works:

Conclusion of the restoration, maintenance and waterproofing of the roof of the Basilica of Gethsemane, restoration of the mosaics of the cupolas and of the floor of the basilica.

We are continuing works of ordinary and extraordinary maintenance.
Friary of the Holy Cenacle
Jesus, together with the Apostles, ate the last supper of his life on earth
Realisation of the new garden with spaces for the celebrations and welcoming of pilgrims, in an area of around 650m2.

Basilica of the Annunciation
The Archangel Gabriel announced to Mary the birth of Jesus.
Installation of telecameras for the live or recorded transmissions of the Celebrations. Installation of a new lighting system in the basilica.
Phase of elaboration of the new project of waterproofing of the grotto, that has been damaged by infiltration of water and humidity.

City of the origins of Mary Magdalen
Continuation of the works of conservation of the archaeological area of Magdala, where important remains of the Roman port of the city have been discovered. We are preparing an itinerary for visits in order to consent to pilgrims to deepen their knowledge regarding the daily life of the town during the times of Jesus.

Archaeological site
Jesus lived here after he left Nazareth and here he began his preaching and accomplished numerous miracles.
In good progress are the works of conservation of the archaeological area (Phase I) with works in the open space in front of the Church. The area is to be dedicated as a space for prayer and meditation.
The mosaics of the Byzantine church on the house of Peter are in the process of being restored.
MOUNT TABOR
Shrine of the Transfiguration
Identified as the "high mountain" where the transfiguration of Jesus took place.
We are working upon the realisation of the new parking lot close to the main gate (1250m2) – Phase I.
SEPHORIS
Site and Shrine of Sephoris
Place recognised by tradition as the house where Mary lived during her adolescence.
The works of maintenance and reconstruction of the external perimeter wall, which had partially collapsed, have been terminated.
A functional recovering of the ancient rooms and the installation of a new prefabricated unit with the function of a residence for the religious of the Incarnate Word, custodians of the Shrine.

Church of the first miracle
The first miracle of Jesus
First phase of the realisation of a parochial centre and a school, in order to meet the needs of the parishioners.
MOUNT NEBO (JORDAN)
Shrine and Memorial of Moses
Conclusion of the project of the "New covering for the Memorial of Moses". The project regards the realisation of a new roof covering for the entire Basilica and of an exhibition itinerary for the mosaics that have been discovered during the excavations. We have furthermore concluded the building of a new Sacristy, and the realisation of new electrical, mechanic and air-conditioning systems.

Scholarships
The financing of 295 Scholarships for University covering the length of four years, distributed in the various Universities: Bethlehem, Hebrew in Jerusalem and Haifa, Bir Zeit, Amman and others.
Support for Aristan crafts
Project of support to ten small artisan firms with the acquisition of spare parts, machines for production, and other aids in favour of security in this activity.

Laboratories for the works in olive wood and mother of pearl
We have completed the works of realisation of laboratories for the works in olive wood and mother of pearl. Institution of courses of professional formation for young Palestinians in order to keep alive the tradition of local manufacturing.
Activities in favour of Families
BETHLEHEM
Parochial family consultative board.The work to support the Parochial Family Consultative Board is proceding, in order to support the principal needs of families on an assistential level.
Franciscan House for young boys.We are continuing the project aimed at helping twenty boys aged between six and twelve, coming from poor families or from families with particular difficulties. Besides the welcoming and assistance to study, the boys are followed by an educator, a social assistant and a psychologist.
Medical assistance. We are continuing the project of medical assistance aimed at families with serious economic difficulties, by providing for the partial or total covering of their medical expenses.
Restructuring of houses.Project of restoring houses where the most needy families dwell. The restoration is being done by local workers who would otherwise not find a job. Besides helping the families, this activity periodically guarantees hundreds of job opportunities.

Conclusion of the works of expansion of the cemetery, making use of an area of roughly 700m2 adjacent to the existing cemetery.
Catholic Action Centre. The centre of the Catholic Acton of Bethlehem has been subjected to a series of interventions of renewal.

Conclusion of the works to realise spaces for recreation for children of the parish of Nazareth.
Apartments for the poor and for young couples
JERUSALEM
Old City. The phase of the project of renewal and restoration of the houses in the Old City is still underway (45 units for habitation have been restored in 2013).
St. James housing project at Beit Hanina: this is a project of 6 bulding blocks with a total of 42 apartments divided in 3 levels.
We have obtained permission for the building of 24 new apartments.
BETHLEHEM
Jesus the Child, St. Catherine and St. Francis housing projects
The ordinary maintenance and the restructuring of the dwelling units in these residential complexes is underway.
Other cultural works
Each year the Custody of the Holy Land economically supports the Faculty of Biblical Sciences and Archaeology of the Studium Biblicum Fanciscanum of Jerusalem. It offers around 30 scholarships to students coming from different dioceses, for the whole length of their studies.
Franciscan Media Center. A new form of communication through an updated website, with the help of TV networks in order to diffuse in real time facts and events linked with the Holy Places of Christian cult.

Parmi les différents objectifs de la mission franciscaine, il faut souligner le soutien et le progrès de la minorité chrétienne vivant dans cette région, la conservation et la préoccupation pour les sites archéologiques et les sanctuaires, les liturgies dans les lieux saints, les activités éducatives grâce un réseau d’écoles primaires et secondaires, ainsi que l’accueil des pèlerins.
Pour 2014, la présence franciscaine en Terre Sainte s’est manifestée par la projection, la programmation et l’exécution des projets et travaux suivants :

Jardin des Oliviers
Fin de la restauration, de la maintenance et de l’imperméabilisation du toit de la Basilique, restauration des mosaïques de la coupole et du sol de la Basilique.
Saint-Sépulcre
Continuation des travaux de maintenance habituels
Communauté franciscaine du Cénacle
Réalisation d’un nouveau jardin et d’un espace de célébration pour l’accueil des pèlerins, sur une étendue de 650 m2.
NAZARETH
Basilique de l’Annonciation
Installation de télé-caméras pour les retransmissions en direct des célébrations. Installation d’un nouveau système d’éclairage dans la Basilique.
Projet d’imperméabilisation de la grotte, endommagée par les infiltrations d’eau et l’humidité.
MAGDALA
Ville de Marie-Madeleine
Poursuite des travaux de conservation des sites archéologiques de Magdala, où d’importants reste du port romain de la ville ont été découverts. Nous préparons un itinéraire pour les visites, pour que les pèlerins approfondissent leur connaissance sur la vie quotidienne au temps de Jésus.
CAPHARNAÜM
Site archéologique
Les travaux de conservation du site archéologique sont en bonne voie (Phase 1), avec des travaux dans l’espace ouvert en face de l’église. L’espace a pour but de devenir un lieu pour la prière et la méditation.
Les mosaïques de l’église byzantine sur la maison de Pierre sont en train d’être restaurées.
MONT THABOR
Lieu de la Transfiguration
Nous sommes en train de travailler sur la réalisation d’un nouveau parking près de l’entrée principale (1250 m2) – Phase 1
SEPHORIS
Site principal de Sephoris
Lieu reconnu par la tradition comme la maison où Marie a vécu durant son adolescence.
Les travaux de maintenance et de reconstruction du mur extérieur, en partie effondré, ont été terminés.
Récupération fonctionnelle des anciennes pièces et installation d’une nouvelle unité préfabriquée pour l’installation de religieuses du Verbe incarné, gardiennes du sanctuaire.
CANA
Eglise du premier miracle
Première phase de réalisation d’un centre paroissial et d’une école, pour répondre aux besoins des paroissiens.
MONT NEBO (Jordanie)
Mémorial de Moïse
Fin du projet de « nouvelle protection du Mémorial de Moïse ». Le projet comprend la réalisation d’un nouveau toit pour la Basilique et un itinéraire d’exposition pour les mosaïques découvertes lors de fouilles. Nous avons en outre achevé la construction d’une nouvelle sacristie, et la réalisation de nouveaux systèmes électriques, mécaniques et de climatisation.

Bourses d’études
Le financement de 295 bourses d’études couvrent une durée de quatre ans, distribuées dans différentes universités : Bethléem, Université hébraïque de Jérusalem, Haïfa, Bir Zeit, Amman, …
Soutien à l’artisanat
Projet de soutien de dix petits artisanats, avec acquisition de pièces détachées, machines de production et autres aides en faveur de la sécurité dans ces activités.
BETHLEEM
Travail du bois d’olivier et de la nacre
Nous avons terminé les travaux pour la production d’objets en bois d’olivier et en nacre. Instauration de leçons pour une formation professionnelle de jeunes palestiniens, afin de garder la tradition d’une fabrication locale.
Activités en faveur des familles
BETHLEEM
Conseil consultatif paroissial des familles. Le travail de soutien du Conseil Consultatif est en cours, afin de soutenir les principaux besoins des familles.
Maison franciscaine pour jeunes gens. Nous continuons le projet visant à aider vingt jeunes garçons âgés de six à douze ans, provenant de familles pauvres ou en situation de difficulté particulière. Outre l’accueil et l’assistance dans les études, les garçons sont suivis par un éducateur, une assistante sociale et un psychologue.
Assistance médicale. Nous poursuivons le projet d’assistance médicale pour les familles en sérieuses difficultés économiques, en couvrant une partie ou la totalité des frais médicaux.
Réfection des maisons. Projets de restauration des maisons où les familles les plus démunies habitent. La restauration se fait par des travailleurs locaux n’ayant pu trouver un emploi. En plus d’aider les familles, cette activité garantie périodiquement des dizaines d’emplois.

Fin des travaux d’extension du cimetière, rajout d’un espace de 700m2 adjacent au cimetière actuel.

Différents travaux de rénovation.
NAZARETH
Centre paroissial
Fin des travaux de réalisation d’espaces pour la récréation des enfants de la paroisse de Nazareth.
Appartements pour les plus pauvres et les jeunes couples.
JERUSALEM
Vieille Ville. La phase du projet de restauration des maisons de la Vielle Ville est toujours en cours (45 unités d’habitations ont été restaurées en 2015).
Projet « St James » à Beit-Hanina : projet de construction de six blocs pour un total de 42 appartements répartis sur 3 niveaux
Nous avons obtenu la permission pour la construction de 24 nouveaux appartements.
BETHLEEM
Projets immobiliers de Jésus-Enfant, Ste Catherine et St François
La maintenance ordinaire et la restructuration des unités de logement dans ces complexes résidentiels sont en cours.
Autres œuvres culturelles
Chaque année, la Custodie de Terre Sainte soutient économiquement la Faculté de Sciences Bibliques et Archéologiques du Studium Biblicum Franciscanum de Jérusalem. Elle délivre 30 bourses d’étude pour des étudiants venus de différents diocèses, pour toute la durée de leurs études.
Christian Media Center. Une nouvelle forme de communication au travers d’un nouveau site internet, avec l’aide des réseaux de télévision, pour diffuser en direct les évènements liturgiques liés à la Terre Sainte.
Œuvres en faveur du Liban et de la Syrie
Outre les travaux projetés et réalisés en Israël et en Palestine, nous avons porté une attention particulière aux chrétiens du Liban et de Syrie, vivant dans une situation d’extrême nécessité.
Appeal for Colletta in support of Christians in the Holy Land
Your Excellency,
At the invitation of the Supreme Pontiffs, the Catholic Church, gathering on Good Friday for the memorial of the sorrowful Passion of Christ, expresses by prayer and by this Collection its support for the faith communities and the sacred places in the Holy Land. The need is particularly felt in this time of crisis, through which the entire region of the Middle East is passing.
The season of Lent favors a meditation full of love for the Holy Places which were present at the origin of our faith and in which the first Christian communities, following Christ, Salus Mundi, were gathered. Already St Paul remembers them, when he warmly exhorts his audience to "to make some contribution for the poor…" (cf. Rm 15:25-26; Gal 2:10; 1 Cor 16; 2 Cor 8-9).
Like the Apostle, so also Pope Francis has particularly at heart the sufferings of so many of our brothers and sisters in this corner of the world, a place made sacred by the Blood of the Lamb. "[Their suffering] aggravated in the past months because of the continuing hostilities in the region … cries out to God and it calls for our commitment to prayer and concrete efforts to help in any way possible." (Pope Francis, Letter to the Christians in the Middle East, 21 December 2014).
Presently, there are millions of refugees fleeing Syria and Iraq, where the roar of arms does not cease and the way of dialogue and concord seems to be completely lost. Senseless hatred seems to prevail instead, along with the helpless desperation of those who have lost everything and have been expulsed from the land of their ancestors.
If the Christians of the Holy Land are encouraged to resist, to the degree possible, the understandable temptation to flee, the faithful throughout the world are asked to take their plight to heart. Also involved are brothers in Christ who belong to various confessions: an ecumenism of blood which points toward the triumph of unity: "ut unum sint"! (Jn 17:21).
This year presents a still more precious opportunity to become pilgrims in faith after the example of the Holy Father, who in May of last year visited this patch of land, so dear to Christians, Jews and Muslims alike. It is a chance to become promoters of dialogue through peace, prayer and sharing of burdens, because "the way of peace is strengthened if we realize that we are all of the same stock and members of the one human family; if we never forget that we have the same Father in heaven and that we are all his children, made in his image and likeness." (Homily of Pope Francis during the Holy Mass at the International Stadium of Amman, 24 May 2014).
The little flock of Christians, spread throughout the Middle East is called "to promote dialogue, to build bridges in the spirit of the Beatitudes (cf. Mt 5:3:12), and to proclaim the Gospel of peace..." (Ibid., Letter to Christians in the Middle East).
Only in the unity of the Spirit and in fraternal charity with all disciples of Christ, can the Church, His Spouse, bear witness to hope before her children who daily live the same sufferings of the Lord, humiliated and abandoned.
I trust that the Good Friday Collection will be welcomed by all of the local Churches, resulting in an ever greater participation in the solidarity coordinated by our Congregation in order to guarantee the Holy Land with necessary support, both for the demands of ordinary ecclesial life and for particular necessities.
To You, to your closest Collaborators, particularly priests and religious men and women, as well as to all the faithful, I express the deepest gratitude of the Holy Father Francis and of this Dicastery, together with that of the Churches in the Land of Christ, for your generous attention and heartfelt response which will make successful this year’s Collecta pro Terra Sancta.

Summary Report of the Custody of the Holy Land on projects and works made with the collection 2013/2014
For many centuries the Custody of the Holy Land has comitted itself to conserve and give new life to the Holy Places of Christianity in the Land of Jesus and in the other countries of the Middle East. Among the various objectives of the Franciscan mission, we mention the support and progress of the Christian minority that lives in these regions, the conservation and cherishing of the archaeological areas and shrines, the interventions in cases of emergencies, the liturgies in the places of cult, the educative and formative activities through a net of elementary and secondary schools, and the assistance to pilgrims. Even in the year 2014, the Franciscan presence in the Holy Land has manifested itself through the projection, programming and execution of the following projects and works:

Conclusion of the restoration, maintenance and waterproofing of the roof of the Basilica of Gethsemane, restoration of the mosaics of the cupolas and of the floor of the basilica.

We are continuing works of ordinary and extraordinary maintenance.
Friary of the Holy Cenacle
Jesus, together with the Apostles, ate the last supper of his life on earth
Realisation of the new garden with spaces for the celebrations and welcoming of pilgrims, in an area of around 650m2.
NAZARETH
Basilica of the Annunciation
The Archangel Gabriel announced to Mary the birth of Jesus.
Installation of telecameras for the live or recorded transmissions of the Celebrations. Installation of a new lighting system in the basilica.
Phase of elaboration of the new project of waterproofing of the grotto, that has been damaged by infiltration of water and humidity.
MAGDALA

City of the origins of Mary Magdalen
Continuation of the works of conservation of the archaeological area of Magdala, where important remains of the Roman port of the city have been discovered. We are preparing an itinerary for visits in order to consent to pilgrims to deepen their knowledge regarding the daily life of the town during the times of Jesus.
CAPERNAHUM
Archaeological site
Jesus lived here after he left Nazareth and here he began his preaching and accomplished numerous miracles.
In good progress are the works of conservation of the archaeological area (Phase I) with works in the open space in front of the Church. The area is to be dedicated as a space for prayer and meditation.
The mosaics of the Byzantine church on the house of Peter are in the process of being restored.
MOUNT TABOR
Shrine of the Transfiguration
Identified as the "high mountain" where the transfiguration of Jesus took place.
We are working upon the realisation of the new parking lot close to the main gate (1250m2) – Phase I.
SEPHORIS
Site and Shrine of Sephoris
Place recognised by tradition as the house where Mary lived during her adolescence.
The works of maintenance and reconstruction of the external perimeter wall, which had partially collapsed, have been terminated.
A functional recovering of the ancient rooms and the installation of a new prefabricated unit with the function of a residence for the religious of the Incarnate Word, custodians of the Shrine.

Church of the first miracle
The first miracle of Jesus
First phase of the realisation of a parochial centre and a school, in order to meet the needs of the parishioners.
MOUNT NEBO (JORDAN)
Shrine and Memorial of Moses
Conclusion of the project of the "New covering for the Memorial of Moses". The project regards the realisation of a new roof covering for the entire Basilica and of an exhibition itinerary for the mosaics that have been discovered during the excavations. We have furthermore concluded the building of a new Sacristy, and the realisation of new electrical, mechanic and air-conditioning systems.

Scholarships
The financing of 295 Scholarships for University covering the length of four years, distributed in the various Universities: Bethlehem, Hebrew in Jerusalem and Haifa, Bir Zeit, Amman and others.
Support for Aristan crafts
Project of support to ten small artisan firms with the acquisition of spare parts, machines for production, and other aids in favour of security in this activity.

Laboratories for the works in olive wood and mother of pearl
We have completed the works of realisation of laboratories for the works in olive wood and mother of pearl. Institution of courses of professional formation for young Palestinians in order to keep alive the tradition of local manufacturing.
Activities in favour of Families
BETHLEHEM
Parochial family consultative board.The work to support the Parochial Family Consultative Board is proceding, in order to support the principal needs of families on an assistential level.
Franciscan House for young boys.We are continuing the project aimed at helping twenty boys aged between six and twelve, coming from poor families or from families with particular difficulties. Besides the welcoming and assistance to study, the boys are followed by an educator, a social assistant and a psychologist.
Medical assistance. We are continuing the project of medical assistance aimed at families with serious economic difficulties, by providing for the partial or total covering of their medical expenses.
Restructuring of houses.Project of restoring houses where the most needy families dwell. The restoration is being done by local workers who would otherwise not find a job. Besides helping the families, this activity periodically guarantees hundreds of job opportunities.

Parish cemetery
Conclusion of the works of expansion of the cemetery, making use of an area of roughly 700m2 adjacent to the existing cemetery.
Catholic Action Centre. The centre of the Catholic Acton of Bethlehem has been subjected to a series of interventions of renewal.
NAZARETH

Conclusion of the works to realise spaces for recreation for children of the parish of Nazareth.
Apartments for the poor and for young couples
JERUSALEM
Old City. The phase of the project of renewal and restoration of the houses in the Old City is still underway (45 units for habitation have been restored in 2013).
St. James housing project at Beit Hanina: this is a project of 6 bulding blocks with a total of 42 apartments divided in 3 levels.
We have obtained permission for the building of 24 new apartments.
BETHLEHEM
Jesus the Child, St. Catherine and St. Francis housing projects
The ordinary maintenance and the restructuring of the dwelling units in these residential complexes is underway.
Other cultural works
Each year the Custody of the Holy Land economically supports the Faculty of Biblical Sciences and Archaeology of the Studium Biblicum Fanciscanum of Jerusalem. It offers around 30 scholarships to students coming from different dioceses, for the whole length of their studies.
Franciscan Media Center. A new form of communication through an updated website, with the help of TV networks in order to diffuse in real time facts and events linked with the Holy Places of Christian cult.
