1. Carissime sorelle, carissimi fratelli, il Signore vi dia pace!
Qualche anno fa ho letto che il responsabile di una parrocchia aveva commissionato uno studio a una società di comunicazione per capire cosa doveva cambiare per poter aumentare il numero di fedeli.
La società di comunicazione aveva analizzato la situazione, aveva visitato la chiesa, seguito le celebrazioni e le attività parrocchiali, e alla fine aveva dato il proprio parere: andavano bene le opere di assistenza sociale, perché davano un’immagine compassionevole della chiesa; la predicazione doveva diventare più breve e più brillante per non stancare la gente; i canti avevano bisogno di essere un po’ ammodernati per assecondare il gusto popolare; ma soprattutto bisognava rimuovere i Crocifissi e sostituirli con qualche simbolo più positivo, meno dolorifico e più attraente.
2. Questo è il mondo in cui viviamo. E c’è il rischio che in questo mondo perfino noi cristiani smarriamo il senso della Croce e dobbiamo riscoprirne il valore. Dobbiamo un po’ come sant’Elena trovare di nuovo la Croce e trovare quella vera! Perché non ogni Croce guarisce e salva, ma solo quella di Gesù.
3. Il 2 aprile del 1969, in una udienza generale, il santo Papa Paolo VI fece un discorso molto chiaro, per reagire a questa tendenza a rimuovere o svuotare la Croce. Ecco le sue parole: “facciamo attenzione. Il Concilio non ha dimenticato che la Croce sta al centro del cristianesimo. Anch’esso ha avuto una rigorosa fedeltà alla parola di San Paolo: «Che non sia resa vana la Croce di Cristo»: «ut non evacuetur crux Christi» (1 Cor. 1, 17); anch’esso, come l’Apostolo, ha detto a se stesso: «Non giudicai di sapere qualche cosa fra voi, se non Gesù Cristo, e questo crocifisso» (1 Cor. 2, 2)”.
4. Il 1° aprile del 1994, è stato un altro santo Papa, Giovanni Paolo II, al termine della Via Crucis del Colosseo, le cui meditazioni erano state preparate dal Patriarca Ecumenico di Costantinopoli Bartolomeo, a mettere in guardia dalla rimozione e dallo svuotamento della Croce da parte di un mondo secolarizzato e ormai dichiaratamente anticristiano. Vale la pena riascoltare qualche frase anche di questo discorso: “il mondo di oggi cerca di svuotare la Croce. Questa è la tradizione anticristiana che si diffonde già da parecchi secoli e vuole svuotare la Croce e vuole dirci che l’uomo non ha le radici nella Croce, non ha neanche la prospettiva e la speranza nella Croce. L’uomo è solamente umano, deve esistere come se Dio non esistesse… abbiamo questo compito comune, dobbiamo dire insieme fra Oriente e Occidente: ‘Ne evacuetur Crux!’ Non sia svuotata la Croce di Cristo, perché se si svuota la Croce di Cristo, l’uomo non ha più radici, non ha più prospettive: è distrutto!”
5. Più recentemente, proprio all’inizio della pandemia, poco più di un anno fa, il 27 marzo del 2020, papa Francesco ha pregato sul sagrato di San Pietro a Roma – apparentemente da solo – e ha scelto di pregare davanti a un’immagine del Crocifisso, un’immagine che era stata portata in processione al tempo delle pestilenze e che aveva portato speranza e guarigione.
Le parole di papa Francesco ci aiutano a capire il senso positivo del saper ritrovare la Croce anche a livello personale, in un tempo carico di sofferenza, di angoscia, di smarrimento e di morte: “Abbiamo un’àncora: nella sua Croce siamo stati salvati. Abbiamo un timone: nella sua Croce siamo stati riscattati. Abbiamo una speranza: nella sua Croce siamo stati risanati e abbracciati affinché niente e nessuno ci separi dal suo amore redentore. …
Abbracciare la sua Croce significa trovare il coraggio di abbracciare tutte le contrarietà del tempo presente, abbandonando per un momento il nostro affanno di onnipotenza e di possesso per dare spazio alla creatività che solo lo Spirito è capace di suscitare. … Nella sua Croce siamo stati salvati per accogliere la speranza e lasciare che sia essa a rafforzare e sostenere tutte le misure e le strade possibili che ci possono aiutare a custodirci e custodire”.
6. Prendiamo atto di questo fatto: il mondo in cui noi viviamo è un mondo che non vuole saperne di Croce e di Crocifisso. Talvolta perfino nella Chiesa qualcuno la rimuove perché non ne comprende il senso. Così è spesso anche a livello personale. Eppure, oggi come al tempo di Sant’Elena noi abbiamo bisogno di riscoprire la Croce di Gesù se vogliamo sperimentare la guarigione del cuore e la salvezza, se vogliamo continuare a vivere con speranza, e se vogliamo trovare un senso pasquale alle nostre stesse sofferenze e croci. Che, detto per inciso, sono molto meno facili da rimuovere dalla nostra esistenza dell’immagine di un crocifisso appesa a una parete.
7. Questo è allora il senso della festa che celebriamo e questo è il senso del fare festa per il ritrovamento della Croce di Gesù, nostro Signore e nostro Salvatore.
In questo luogo del ritrovamento della vera Croce da parte di sant’Elena quasi 1700 anni fa, chiediamo allora la grazia per la Chiesa, di continuare a testimoniare che la Croce è veramente sorgente di salvezza, di speranza e di misericordia.
Chiediamo la grazia per il mondo attuale di riscoprire che la Croce è il segno concreto dell’amore di Dio per il mondo, un segno al quale volgere lo sguardo e dal quale lasciarsi attirare.
Chiediamo la grazia per ciascuno di noi di trovare nella Croce di Gesù l’àncora alla quale legare saldamente la barca della nostra vita, il timone per dirigerla e la bussola per non perdersi. Così sia.

1. Dear brothers and sisters,
May the Lord give you peace!
A few years ago, I read that a parish leader had commissioned a study from a communications company to understand what had to change in order to increase the number of faithful.
The communications company had analyzed the situation, had visited the church, followed the celebrations and parish activities, and finally gave its opinion: the social welfare works were fine, because they gave a compassionate image of the church; the preaching had to become shorter and brighter so as not to tire the people; the hymns needed to be modernized a little to accommodate popular taste; but above all it was necessary to remove the Crucifixes and replace them with some more positive, less painful and more attractive symbol.
2. This is the world we now live in, moreover, there is the risk that in this world even we Christians lose the meaning of the Cross and have to rediscover its value. We must, like Saint Helen, find the Cross again and find the real one! Because not every Cross heals and saves, but only that of Jesus.
3. On April 2, 1969, in a general audience, the Saint Pope Paul VI made a very clear speech, to react to this tendency to remove or empty the Cross. Here are his words: «let us be careful. The Council has not forgotten that the Cross is at the centre of Christianity. It too had a rigorous fidelity to the words of St. Paul: “May the Cross of Christ not be made in vain”: “ut non evacuetur crux Christi” (1 Cor. 1:17); he too, like the Apostle, said to himself: “I did not think I knew anything among you, except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified” (1 Cor. 2, 2)».
4. On the 1st April 1994, it was another holy Pope, St. John Paul II, at the end of the Via Crucis at the Colosseum, whose meditations had been prepared by the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople Bartholomew, who warned against the removal and emptying of the Cross by a secularized and by now openly anti-Christian world. It is also worth listening to a few sentences from this discourse: «To-day's world tries to empty the Cross. This is the anti-Christian tradition that has spread for several centuries and wants to empty the Cross and wants to tell us that man has no roots. in the Cross, he does not even have the prospect and hope in the Cross. Man is only human, he must exist as if God did not exist ... we have this common task, we must say together between East and West: “Ne evacuetur Crux!” The Cross of Christ must not be emptied, because if the Cross of Christ is emptied, man no longer has roots, he no longer has prospects: he is destroyed!»
5. More recently, at the very beginning of the pandemic, just over a year ago, on the 27th March, 2020, Pope Francis prayed in the piazza of St. Peter's in Rome - apparently alone - and chose to pray in front of an image of the Crucifix, an image that had been carried in procession at the time of the plagues and which had brought hope and healing.
The words of Pope Francis help us to understand the positive meaning of knowing how to find the Cross even on a personal level, in a time full of suffering, anguish, loss and death: «We have an anchor: in His Cross for we have been saved. We have a helm: in His Cross for we were redeemed. We have a hope: in His Cross for we have been healed and embraced so that nothing and no one can separate us from His redeeming love for us?. ...
Embracing His Cross means finding the courage to embrace all the difficulties of the present time, abandoning for a moment our anxiety of omnipotence and possession to give space to the creativity that only the Spirit is capable of arousing within us. In His Cross we were saved to welcome hope and allow it to strengthen and support all possible measures and paths that can help us to guard and safeguard».
6. We take note of this fact: the world in which we live is a world that does not want to know about the Cross and the Crucified One. Sometimes even in the Church someone removes it because they do not understand its meaning. This is often the case on a personal level as well. Yet, to-day as at the time of Saint Helen we need to rediscover the Cross of Jesus if we want to experience heart healing and salvation, if we want to continue living with hope, and if we want to find an Easter meaning to our own sufferings and crosses. Which, incidentally, are much less easy to remove from our existence than the image of a crucifix hanging on a wall.
7. This is then the meaning of the feast we celebrate to-day and this is the meaning of celebrating the Finding of the Cross of Jesus, our Lord and our Saviour.
In this place where the true Cross was found by St. Helen almost 1700 years ago, we ask for the grace of the Church to continue to bear witness so that the Cross is truly a source of salvation, hope and mercy.
We ask for the grace for the present world to rediscover that the Cross is the concrete sign of God's love for the world, a sign to which we may turn our gaze and allow ourselves to be attracted to it.
Let us ask for the grace for each one of us to find in the True Cross of Jesus the anchor to which we can firmly tie the boat of our life, the rudder to steer it and the compass to avoid getting lost.
