- Carissime sorelle, carissimi fratelli,
il Signore vi dia pace!
Ci troviamo a celebrare la festa del ritrovamento della Santa Croce e a celebrare questa festa come festa nazionale della vostra patria, le Filippine. Vi invito a concentrare l’attenzione su tre aspetti:
- la croce di Gesù che ci rivela fino a che punto Dio ci ama;
- il fatto che trovare la vera croce significa trovare la salvezza per la nostra persona e per l’intera umanità;
- cosa dobbiamo fare se vogliamo veramente cogliere il frutto di questa festa.
- Oggi in tutta la Chiesa si celebra la solennità della Santissima Trinità: Padre e Figlio e Spirito Santo, unico Dio in tre persone. Anche nel mistero della croce vediamo all’opera tutta la Trinità: Dio Padre manifesta il suo amore donando suo Figlio per salvare l’umanità; Dio Figlio dona tutto se stesso per amore del Padre e per amore nostro; Dio Spirito Santo fa in modo che questo amore e questa salvezza posano raggiungere ogni uomo e ogni donna, da Adamo ed Eva fino all’ultima persona umana che nascerà chissà quando e chissà dove. In questa donazione fatta per la nostra salvezza brilla la gloria della Santissima Trinità. Questa gloria è la luminosità dell’amore di Dio per ognuno di noi, per tutti i popoli della terra e per l’umanità intera.
Quando noi pensiamo a Gesù che muore in croce noi dobbiamo pensare che il suo è il gesto di massima solidarietà e di massima redenzione proprio perché morendo in croce Gesù si mette al posto di chi ha perso la propria dignità, di chi è escluso dalla società e anche di chi si è allontanato da Dio. In questo modo il Signore ci dice che nessuno è senza dignità, senza speranza, senza possibilità di ricupero. Nessuno è irrimediabilmente lontano da Dio, perché in Gesù che muore sulla croce è il Padre stesso che si è fatto e si fa vicino ad ogni persona, anche a chi vive la degradazione più grave da un punto di vista umano, sociale e religioso. Pensate quale grande amore ci viene rivelato, manifestato, espresso.
- Anche l’immagine del ritrovamento della Santa Croce è molto significativa. La tradizione ci consegna un racconto molto significativo: nel 396/397 (più di 1400 anni fa) la regina Elena, madre dell’imperatore Costantino, era venuta in pellegrinaggio a Gerusalemme e desiderava riscoprire e ricuperare al culto i luoghi della nostra redenzione.
La regina Elena desiderava soprattutto ritrovare la vera croce di Gesù, solo che invece di trovarne una ne trova tre e non sa come riconoscere quella vera. Il Vescovo Macario suggerisce di far toccare a degli ammalti gravi le varie croci. Viene portata una donna moribonda e questa guarisce solo quando tocca la vera croce di Gesù.
Il messaggio è evidente: non ogni croce porta salvezza, ma solo la croce di Gesù. Proprio perché nella croce di Gesù si manifesta l’amore più grande, quell’amore che “è più forte della morte”, quell’amore che è in grado di guarirci dai morsi velenosi e mortali del male e del Maligno; dai morsi della nostra fragilità umana, fisica, psichica, morale e religiosa; dal morso della morte.
- Quale atteggiamento allora siamo chiamati ad assumere perché la vera croce di Gesù possa portare frutto nella nostra vita, in quella del nostro popolo e dell’umanità? San Francesco, la cui vita è stata segnata e trasformata dall’incontro con il Crocifisso ci suggerisce di contemplare e seguire il Cristo Crocifisso: “Guardiamo con attenzione, fratelli tutti, il buon pastore, che per salvare le sue pecore sostenne la passione della croce. – ci dice san Francesco e continua – Le pecore del Signore l’hanno seguito nella tribolazione e nella persecuzione, nella vergogna e nella fame, nell’infermità e nella tentazione e in altre simili cose, e per questo hanno ricevuto dal Signore la vita eterna” (Ammonizione VI: FF 155).
Il punto di arrivo di questo cammino insieme al crocifisso è che noi stessi diventiamo una immagine vivente del mistero della croce. Quando san Bonaventura racconta la discesa di san Francesco dal monte della Verna, dopo aver avuto la visione del Serafino Crocifisso e aver ricevuto il dono delle Stimmate dice che il Poverello “portava con sé l’effigie del Crocifisso, raffigurata non su tavole di pietra o di legno dalla mano di un artefice, ma disegnata nella sua carne dal dito del Dio vivente” cioè dall’azione dello Spirito Santo (LM XIII,5: FF 1228).
- Chiediamo allora per ognuno di noi e per il popolo filippino l’intercessione di sant’Elena, che ha potuto trovare la Vera Croce, e l’intercessione di san Francesco che ha cercato di amare e seguire Gesù portando ogni giorno la sua Santa Croce.
Che la fedeltà a Gesù Crocifisso e l’amore per la Sua vera croce porti salvezza, prosperità e pace al popolo filippino e a tutti i suoi figli che vivono in patria e quelli che il Signore ha inviato come suoi testimoni nel mondo intero.
Che la Santa Croce di Gesù Cristo nostro Signore, che ci rivela l’infinito amore della Santissima Trinità, ricolmi di grazia e pace ognuno e ognuna di voi e le vostre famiglie. Così sia.

- Dear sisters and brothers, may the Lord give you peace!
We are gathered here to celebrate the feast of the Finding of the Holy Cross, and to celebrate this feast as the National Feast-day of your country, the Philippines. I invite you to concentrate your attention on three points:
- The cross of Jesus reveals to us the extent of God’s love for us;
- The fact of finding the true cross means that we find salvation for our persons and for the entire humanity:
- What are we to do if we truly want to make this feast fruitful.
- Today the universal Church celebrates the solemnity of the Holy Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, one God in three persons. In the mystery of the cross we also see the work of the entire Trinity: God the Father manifests his love by offering his Son in order to save humanity; God the Son offers his whole self for love of the Father and for our love; God the Holy Spirit makes it possible for this love and for this salvation to reach every man and woman, from Adam and Eve to the last person who will be born who knows when or where. In this self-giving for the benefit of our salvation shines the glory of the Most Holy Trinity. This glory is the splendour of the love of God for each and every one of us, for all people of the earth and for the entire humanity.
When we think of Jesus who dies on the cross we should think that his action is one of the greatest solidarity, and of the maximum redemption precisely because, when he died on the cross, Jesus placed himself in the place of all those who lost their dignity, who have been excluded from society and of those who have strayed far away from God. In this way the Lord tells us that nobody is without dignity, without hope, without the possibility of finding the meaning of his life once again. Nobody is destined to remain far away from God in a way that cannot find salvation, because in Jesus who dies on the cross it is the Father himself who has become and becomes close to each person, even to those who live a degraded form of existence from the human, social and religious points of view. Think about this great love that is revealed, manifested and expressed to us.
- The image of the finding of the Holy Cross is also full of meaning. Tradition has handed down to us a very meaningful episode: in the year 396/397 (more than 1400 years ago) queen Helena, mother of Emperor Constantine, came in pilgrimage to Jerusalem and wished to rediscover and to give a new life to the cult in the places of our redemption.
Queen Helena wished above all to find the true cross of Jesus. However, instead of finding one, she found three and she could not recognise the true cross. Bishop Macarios suggested to her to touch sick persons with the wood of those crosses. The people brought a dying woman and as soon as the true cross of Jesus had been applied to her body, she was cured.
The message is evident: not every cross brings salvation, but only the cross of Jesus. Precisely because in the cross of Jesus the greatest love is shown, namely that love which “is stronger than death”, that love which is capable of healing us from the venomous and deadly bites of evil and of the Devil; it liberates us from the bites of our human, physical, psychic, moral and religious weakness; and ultimately from the bite of death.
- What attitude are we therefore called to assume in order that the true cross of Jesus can bring fruit in our life, in that of our nation and in that of humanity? Saint Francis, whose life has been marked and transformed by his encounter with the Crucified Jesus, suggests to us that we should contemplate and follow Christ Crucified: “Brothers, let us gaze with attention at the good shepherd, who, in order to save his sheep, suffered the passion of the cross. Saint Francis tells us these words and then continues: The sheep of the Lord have followed him in tribulation and in persecution, in shame and in hunger, in sickness and in temptation and in other similar circumstances, and for this reason they received from the Lord the gift of eternal life” (Admonition VI).
The point of arrival of this journey with the Crucified Jesus is that we ourselves become a living image of the mystery of the cross. When Saint Bonaventure narrates the descent of Saint Francis from Mount La Verna, after having received the vision of the Crucified Seraph and the gift of the Stigmata, he tells us that the Poverello “carried in himself the image of the Crucifix, represented not on stone or wooden tablets by the hand of an artisan, but imprinted in the living flesh of Francis by the finger of the living God”, namely, through the action of the Holy Spirit (LMj XIII,5).
- Let us ask once more for each and every one of us and for the people of the Philippines the intercession of Saint Helena, who found the True Cross, and the intercession of Saint Francis who tried to love and to follow Jesus by carrying each day his Holy Cross.
May the faithfulness towards Jesus Crucified and love for his true cross bring salvation, prosperity and peace to the people of the Philippines and to all his children who live in your home country and to those who the Lord has sent as his witnesses in the whole world.
May the Holy Cross of Jesus Christ our Lord, that reveals us the infinite love of the Holy Trinity, fill with grace and peace each and every one of you and your families. Amen.
