Incontro con Papa Tawadros, Il Cairo 26 febbraio 2019
Santità Papa Tawadros,
desideriamo salutarla con il saluto caro al nostro fondatore san Francesco d’Assisi:
il Signore le dia pace!
Sono trascorsi 800 anni da quando san Francesco venne in terra d’Egitto, in piena Quinta Crociata, per incontrare il Sultano al Malik al Kamil e indicare con un gesto profetico che il dialogo e l’incontro pacifico è preferibile ed anche più efficace della violenza e dello scontro di civiltà.
Nel ringraziarla per averci offerto questa possibilità di incontro fraterno desideriamo anzitutto porgere a lei e attraverso di lei a tutti i nostri fratelli e sorelle della Chiesa Copta di Egitto la nostra vicinanza e la nostra solidarietà per gli atti di terrorismo e di violenza che avete subito nel corso di questi ultimi anni. Vi siamo vicini, siamo solidali con voi, sentiamo che la vostra sofferenza è la nostra sofferenza.
In questi anni la Chiesa Copta ha offerto a tutti i fedeli del Medio Oriente e del Mondo intero la testimonianza del martirio, che è la testimonianza della fedeltà a Cristo fino all’effusione del sangue, è la testimonianza della mitezza che vince sulla violenza, è la testimonianza di chi vince il male con il bene, è la testimonianza di chi arriva ad amare anche il nemico e sceglie di subire la violenza piuttosto che di usarla. Come ci ha ricordato uno scrittore cristiano africano del II secolo, Tertulliano, “Il sangue dei martiri è seme di nuovi cristiani”.
Ci sentiamo in dovere di ringraziarvi per questa testimonianza di martirio, di fedeltà a Gesù Cristo, di amore alla Chiesa. E sentiamo al tempo stesso importanti le parole della dichiarazione recentemente sottoscritta da papa Francesco e dal Grande Iman di Al Ahzar al Tayyeb poche settimane fa ad Abu Dhabi: “dichiariamo – fermamente – che le religioni non incitano mai alla guerra e non sollecitano sentimenti di odio, ostilità, estremismo, né invitano alla violenza o allo spargimento di sangue. Queste sciagure sono frutto della deviazione dagli insegnamenti religiosi, dell’uso politico delle religioni e anche delle interpretazioni di gruppi di uomini di religione che hanno abusato – in alcune fasi della storia – dell’influenza del sentimento religioso sui cuori degli uomini per portali a compiere ciò che non ha nulla a che vedere con la verità della religione, per realizzare fini politici e economici mondani e miopi. Per questo noi chiediamo a tutti di cessare di strumentalizzare le religioni per incitare all’odio, alla violenza, all’estremismo e al fanatismo cieco e di smettere di usare il nome di Dio per giustificare atti di omicidio, di esilio, di terrorismo e di oppressione. Lo chiediamo per la nostra fede comune in Dio, che non ha creato gli uomini per essere uccisi o per scontrarsi tra di loro e neppure per essere torturati o umiliati nella loro vita e nella loro esistenza. Infatti Dio, l’Onnipotente, non ha bisogno di essere difeso da nessuno e non vuole che il Suo nome venga usato per terrorizzare la gente” (Dichiarazione congiunta, 04.02.2019).
In questo anno per noi speciale, come frati della Custodia di Terra santa, siamo voluti venire anche noi come pellegrini in questa terra benedetta e santa di Egitto, dove la Santa Famiglia trovò rifugio e dove il Verbo Incarnato trascorse parte della sua fanciullezza, dove predicò il vangelo il Santo evangelista Marco, dove i santi Cirillo e Atanasio difesero intrepidamente la fede della Chiesa e dove Antonio il Grande ci insegnò per primo a lasciare il mondo, distribuire i beni ai poveri e seguire il Signore Gesù Cristo in obbedienza, senza nulla di proprio e in castità.
In questa terra benedetta e santa, otto secoli fa, venne anche il nostro fondatore san Francesco d’Assisi, amante e seguace di Cristo, pellegrino disarmato, annunciatore di riconciliazione e di pace. Come Antonio il Grande aveva sentito la chiamata a seguire il Signore Gesù Cristo e vivere il Vangelo in obbedienza, senza nulla di proprio e castità. Come Antonio il Grande aveva sentito la chiamata a riparare la Chiesa in un tempo in cui la Chiesa soffriva divisioni all’interno e attacchi all’esterno. Come Antonio il Grande aveva fatto del tau, simbolo di salvezza perché simbolo della croce di Cristo, il simbolo della propria missione e la sua stessa firma.
Grazie al suo viaggio in Egitto, il nostro fondatore poté poi visitare i Luoghi Santi di Gerusalemme e Betlemme per venerare la grotta nella quale il Figlio di Dio è nato e la mangiatoia in cui Maria lo depose dopo averlo avvolto in fasce, e per venerare anche il Golgota dove il Cristo è morto per noi e la tomba nella quale ha vinto la morte, ci ha aperto il paradiso e ha portato la nostra umanità a partecipare alla vita stessa di Dio. Di questi stessi Luoghi, per grazia di Dio e per un disegno della sua Provvidenza, siamo diventati i custodi.
Al termine di questo breve saluto, Santità, desidero ancora una volta ringraziarla per l’occasione di questo incontro per noi così importante, dato il legame di fraternità che ci lega ai fedeli della Chiesa Copta anche a Gerusalemme, grazie all’amicizia con sua Eccellenza il Vescovo Antonios.
Nuovamente le esprimiamo la vicinanza e la solidarietà di tutti i frati della Custodia di Terra Santa e mentre le assicuriamo il nostro ricordo nella preghiera per il suo servizio alla Chiesa Copta e all’unità della Chiesa, le chiediamo un ricordo speciale nella preghiera per la nostra missione in Terra Santa.

Your Holiness Pope Tawadros,
First of all, we would like to greet you with the salutation dear to our founder Saint Francis of Assisi:
The Lord give you peace!
800 years have passed since Saint Francis came to the land of Egypt, during the Fifth Crusade, in order to meet Sultan al Malik al Kamil and indicate with a prophetic gesture that dialogue and peaceful encounter are preferable and more effective than violence and clash of civilisations.
Thank you for having offered to us this possibility of a fraternal encounter. We would first of all like to convey to you, and through you, to all our brothers and sisters of the Coptic Church of Egypt, our closeness and our solidarity in face of the acts of terrorism and violence that you have suffered in the course of these last years. We are close to you, we support you, we feel that your suffering is also our suffering.
In these years the Coptic Church has offered the testimony of martyrdom to all the faithful of the Middle East and of the entire World. This is the witness of faithfulness to Christ unto the shedding of blood. It is the witness of meekness that wins over violence. It is the witness of those who win over evil with good. It is the witness of those who arrive to love even their enemies and who choose to undergo violence rather than make use of violence. As an African Christian writer of the second century, namely Tertullian, reminded us: “The blood of martyrs is the seed of new Christians.” We feel it is our duty to thank you for this witness of martyrdom, of faithfulness to Jesus Christ, of love to the Church. At the same time, we feel how important are the words of the joint declaration that Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of Al Azhar al Tayyeb have signed some weeks ago in Abu Dhabi: “Moreover, we resolutely declare that religions must never incite war, hateful attitudes, hostility and extremism, nor must they incite violence or the shedding of blood. These tragic realities are the consequence of a deviation from religious teachings. They result from a political manipulation of religions and from interpretations made by religious groups who, in the course of history, have taken advantage of the power of religious sentiment in the hearts of men and women in order to make them act in a way that has nothing to do with the truth of religion. This is done for the purpose of achieving objectives that are political, economic, worldly and short-sighted. We thus call upon all concerned to stop using religions to incite hatred, violence, extremism and blind fanaticism, and to refrain from using the name of God to justify acts of murder, exile, terrorism and oppression. We ask this on the basis of our common belief in God who did not create men and women to be killed or to fight one another, nor to be tortured or humiliated in their lives and circumstances. God, the Almighty, has no need to be defended by anyone and does not want His name to be used to terrorize people.” (Joint Declaration on Human Fraternity for world peace and living together, 04.02.2019).
In this special year for us, as brothers of the Custody of the Holy Land, we also have wanted to come as pilgrims in this blessed and holy land of Egypt, where the Holy Family found refuge and where the Incarnate Word spent part of his childhood, where the Holy Evangelist Mark preached the Gospel, where Saints Cyril and Athanasius courageously defended the faith of the Church, and where Anthony the Great was the first to teach us how to leave the world, distribute our goods to the poor and follow the Lord Jesus Christ in obedience, with nothing of our own, and in chastity.
In this blessed and holy land, eight centuries ago, our founder Saint Francis of Assisi also came, as a lover and follower of Christ, as an unarmed pilgrim, a herald of reconciliation and peace. Just like Anthony the Great, Francis also heard the calling to follow the Lord Jesus Christ and to live the Gospel in obedience, without anything of his own and in chastity. Just like Anthony the Great, he also heard the call to repair the Church during a time in which the Church was suffering divisions within and attacks from outside. Just like Anthony the Great, Francis also made use of the TAU, symbol of salvation because it is a symbol of the Cross of Christ, the symbol of Francis’ own mission and the mark of his own signature.
Thanks to his journey in Egypt, our founder could also visit the Holy Places of Jerusalem and of Bethlehem in order to venerate the grotto in which the Son of God was born and the Manger in which Mary placed him after having wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and also in order to venerate Golgotha, where Christ died for us and the Tomb from which he conquered death, where he opened paradise for us and from where he brought our humanity to participate in the same life of God. With the grace of God and through a design of his Providence, we have become the custodians of these same Places.
At the end of this brief greeting, Your Holiness, I would once again like to thank you for the occasion of this meeting, which is so important for us, given the bond of fraternity that also unites us to the faithful of the Coptic Church in Jerusalem, thanks to the friendship with His Excellency Bishop Antonios.
Once more we express the closeness and solidarity of all the brothers of the Custody of the Holy Land, and, while at the same time we assure you of our prayers for your service in favour of the Coptic Church and for the unity of the Church, we ask you to remember in a special way in your prayers our mission in the Holy Land.
