Imparare da Maria la prontezza nel servizio - ​​​​​​​Learn from Mary the promptness of service

Carissimi giovani confratelli che oggi ricevete il ministero di lettore e di accoliti, carissime sorelle e carissimi fratelli, il Signore vi dia pace!

1. Considerate una grazia di poter ricevere questi ministeri, legati alla Parola e all’Eucaristia, nella festa della visita di Maria Santissima a Santa Elisabetta. Infatti, la giovane Maria che va in fretta dalla cugina Elisabetta è un esempio e un’immagine potente di cosa significa accogliere la Parola di Dio perché si faccia carne, ma anche di cosa significa trasmettere e donare con gioia la Parola di Dio che si è fatta carne.

Sia nel servizio di lettori, sia nel servizio di accoliti imparate da Maria.

Non è un caso che san Francesco paragoni il modo in cui Maria accoglie la Parola al modo in cui si realizza l’Eucaristia nella liturgia: “Ecco, ogni giorno egli [il Signore Gesù] si umilia, come quando dalla sede regale discese nel grembo della Vergine; ogni giorno egli stesso viene a noi in apparenza umile; ogni giorno discende dal seno del Padre sull'altare nelle mani del sacerdote” (Amm I,16-18: FF 144).

2. A quelli di voi che diventeranno lettori verrà consegnato il libro delle Sacre Scritture e vi verrà detto: “Ricevi il libro delle sante Scritture e trasmetti fedelmente la Parola di Dio, perché germogli e fruttifichi nel cuore degli uomini”.

Siete chiamati prima di tutto a ricevere la Parola di Dio. Tutti noi siamo chiamati a questo. Poi siete chiamati a trasmettere fedelmente questa stessa Parola. In questo – lo ripeto – Maria è un modello straordinario, non da ammirare ma da imitare.

Nell’Annunciazione Maria riceve, per opera dello Spirito Santo, la Parola di Dio in un modo così reale che in lei il Verbo eterno del Padre, come ama chiamarlo san Francesco nei suoi “Scritti”, diventa carne. Nella visitazione Maria condivide con Elisabetta il dono che ha ricevuto. Il momento in cui Maria saluta Elisabetta non è il momento di un saluto formale e convenzionale, come quando noi ci diciamo “buon giorno” o “buona sera” o “ciao”.

Il verbo greco usato per dire che Maria saluta la cugina Elisabetta (ἀσπάζομαι) ha una dimensione fisica, esprime che il saluto avviene attraverso l’abbraccio tra due persone. Se io immagino questo abbraccio, vedo il grembo di Elisabetta, che è ormai al sesto mese, che tocca il grembo di Maria, che ha appena concepito.

3. In quel momento il bambino che è nel grembo di Elisabetta, cioè Giovanni il precursore, sente la presenza del bambino che è appena concepito in Maria, ma è già Dio che abita in pienezza e corporalmente in Gesù: poche cellule di carne e sangue, ma è già il Salvatore che si avvicina.

E in quel momento esulta Giovanni Battista, Elisabetta fa l’esperienza di una speciale pienezza di Spirito Santo e profetizza. E Maria esulta e si mette a cantare.

4. Carissimi giovani che tra poco sarete istituiti lettori: è così che bisogna accogliere la Parola di Dio ed è così che bisogna trasmetterla. Bisogna accoglierla in modo che diventi carne dentro di noi e bisogna trasmetterla in modo tale che susciti adesione, risposta.

Bisogna trasmetterla con una tale gioia e pienezza di Spirito che chi la riceve percepisca di ricevere una persona viva: Gesù. E bisogna trasmetterla esultando, cioè con l’entusiasmo dello Spirito, che trascina altri in questo vortice e in questa danza di gioia che dev’essere la nostra testimonianza di vita.

5. Anche voi futuri accoliti guardate a Maria. Su di voi verrà pronunciata una benedizione subito prima che vi sia consegnata la patena con l’ostia e il calice con il vino.

Pregheremo per voi il Padre: “Fa’ che questi tuoi figli, assidui nel servizio dell’altare, distribuiscano fedelmente il Pane della Vita ai loro fratelli e crescano continuamente nella fede e nella carità per l’edificazione del tuo Regno”.

Imparate da Maria anche voi qualcosa di fondamentale. Imparate che bisogna sapersi alzare e muovere in fretta per donare Gesù ai propri fratelli e alimentare in noi e in loro la fede e la carità.

Imparate che bisogna saper tener unito sempre il servizio che si compie nella celebrazione con il servizio che siamo chiamati a svolgere nella vita.

Quando Maria visita la cugina Elisabetta non si limita a cantare e danzare! Si ferma con lei tre mesi, cresce nella fede assieme alla cugina e si mette al suo servizio, aiutandola nella fase conclusiva e più delicata della sua gravidanza.

5. Se volete servire il Signore ricordate questo e imparate questo: Maria si alza e si mette in cammino in fretta e rimane a servizio in modo prolungato. Non siate pigri, perciò, nel servire. E ogni volta che vi viene chiesto un servizio ricordatevi che vi viene data l’occasione per vivere il vostro ministero, per assumere pian piano la mentalità del servizio come stile di vita.

Non siate pigri quando è il vostro turno di fare il servizio all’altare, ma nemmeno quando vi viene chiesto di fare qualsiasi altro servizio. Non siate pigri quando è il vostro turno di andare ad animare una celebrazione al Sepolcro. Non siate pigri quando avete da servire a tavola i vostri fratelli. Non siate pigri quando è il vostro turno di fare le pulizie. Non siate pigri se c’è da curare l’orto o il pollaio. Non siate pigri quando si tratta di studiare o di fare un elaborato scritto o un esame. Non siate pigri quando il maestro o il guardiano vi chiedono di fare qualche servizio e vi affidano qualche responsabilità.

Non siate pigri mai. Imparate da Maria.

Maria è l’opposto della pigrizia: si alza in piedi, si mette in cammino in fretta, si mette a servire in modo attento e costante.

7. Carissimi giovani che oggi ricevete il lettorato e l’accolitato, anche voi vi siete alzati e vi siete messi in cammino, rispondendo alla chiamata del Signore. Anche voi come Maria porterete la Parola e il Corpo del Signore Gesù a tutti coloro che incontrerete.

Che possa realizzarsi anche in voi il contenuto della colletta della Messa della Visitazione che si celebra nel tempo di Avvento: “O Dio, salvatore di tutti i popoli, che per mezzo della beata Vergine Maria, arca della nuova alleanza, hai recato alla casa di Elisabetta la salvezza e la gioia, fa’ che docili all'azione dello Spirito possiamo anche noi portare Cristo ai fratelli e magnificare il tuo nome con inni di lode e con la santità della vita” (Messe della beata Vergine Maria, Tempo di Avvento, n. 3 Messa della visitazione). Così sia.

Dear young brothers who today receive the ministry of reader and acolytes, dear brothers and sisters,

May the Lord give you peace!

1. Consider it a grace to be able to receive these ministries, linked to the Word and the Eucharist, on the feast of the visit of Mary Most Holy to St. Elizabeth. In fact, the young Mary who goes quickly to her cousin Elizabeth is an example and a powerful image of what it means to welcome the Word of God to become flesh, but also of what it means to transmit and joyfully give the Word of God that was made flesh.

Both in the service of readers and in the service of acolytes you can learn from Mary.

It is no coincidence that St. Francis compares the way in which Mary welcomes the Word to the way in which the Eucharist is realized in the Liturgy: “Behold, every day he [the Lord Jesus] humbles Himself, as when from the royal seat He descended into the womb of the Virgin; every day He Himself comes to us in humble appearance; every day He descends from the bosom of the Father upon the altar into the hands of the priest” (Adm I, 16-18: FF 144).

2. Those of you who become readers will be given the book of the Holy Scriptures and you will be told: “Receive the book of the Holy Scriptures and faithfully transmit the Word of God, so that it may blossom and bear fruit in the hearts of men”.

You are called first of all to receive the Word of God. We are all called to this. Then you are called to faithfully transmit this same Word. In this - I repeat - Mary is an extraordinary model, not to be admired but to imitate.

In the Annunciation Mary receives, through the work of the Holy Spirit, the Word of God in such a real way that in her the eternal Word of the Father, as St. Francis likes to call Him in his "Writings", becomes flesh. In the visitation, Mary shares with Elizabeth the gift she has received. The moment when Mary greets Elizabeth is not the time for a formal and conventional greeting, as when we say "good morning" or "good evening" or "hello".

The Greek verb used to say that Mary greets her cousin Elizabeth (ἀσπάζομαι) has a physical dimension, it expresses that the greeting takes place through the embrace between two people. If I imagine this embrace, I see Elizabeth's womb, which is now in her sixth month, touching the womb of Mary, who has just conceived.

3. At that moment the child who is in Elizabeth's womb, that is John the precursor, feels the presence of the child who has just been conceived in Mary, but it is already God who lives fully and bodily in Jesus: few cells of flesh and blood, but He is already the Saviour who approaches.

It is in that moment John the Baptist rejoices, Elizabeth experiences a special fullness of the Holy Spirit and prophesies, then Mary rejoices and begins to sing.

4. Dear young people who will soon be instituted as readers: this is how the Word of God must be accepted and this is how it must be transmitted. We must welcome it in such a way that it becomes flesh within us and we must transmit it in such a way that it arouses adhesion, response.

It must be transmitted with such joy and fullness of the Spirit that those who receive it perceive that they are receiving a living person: Jesus. Let it be our life witness.

5. You future acolytes also look to Mary. A blessing will be pronounced upon you immediately before the paten with the host and the chalice with the wine are given to you.

We will pray to the Father for you: “Arrange for these children of Yours, assiduous in the service of the altar, faithfully distribute the Bread of Life to their brothers and continue to grow in faith and charity for the building of Your Kingdom”.

Learn something fundamental from Mary too. Learn that we must know how to get up and move quickly to give Jesus to our brothers and to nourish faith and charity in us and in them.

Learn that it is necessary to know how to keep always united the service that is performed in the celebration with the service that we are called to carry out in life.

When Mary visits her cousin Elizabeth she does not just sing and dance! She stays with her for three months, she grows in faith together with her cousin and puts herself at her service, helping her in the final and most delicate phase of her pregnancy.

6. If you want to serve the Lord, remember this and learn this: Mary gets up and sets out quickly and remains in service for a long time. Therefore, do not be lazy in serving. Indeed, every time you are asked to do a service, remember that you are given the opportunity to live your ministry, to gradually assume the mentality of service as a lifestyle.

Do not be lazy when it is your turn to do altar service, in fact not even when you are asked to do any kind of service. Do not be lazy when it is your turn to go to animate a celebration at the Holy Sepulchre. Do not be lazy when you need to serve your brothers at table. Do not be lazy when it is your turn to do cleaning. Do not be lazy if you need to take care of the garden or the chicken coop. Do not be lazy when it comes to studying or presenting a paper or exam. Do not be lazy when the Master or Guardian asks you to do some service and entrusts you with some responsibility.

Never be lazy. Learn from Mary.

Mary is the opposite of laziness: she stands up, sets out quickly, begins to serve attentively and constantly.

7. Dear young people who today receive the lectorate and the acolyte, you too have “got up and set out”, responding to the call of the Lord. Like Mary, you too will bring the Word and the Body of the Lord Jesus to all those you meet.

May the content of the opening prayer of the Votive Mass of the Visitation, which is celebrated in the time of Advent, be realized also in you:

“O God, Saviour of all peoples, whom through the Blessed Virgin Mary, Ark of the New Covenant, You brought to the house of Elizabeth, salvation and joy, make us docile to the action of the Spirit, that we too may bring Christ to our brothers and magnify Your name with hymns of praise and with the sanctity of life” (Masses of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Season of Advent, No. 3 Mass of the visitation).
