Gesù Cristo, Maria, ciascuno di noi - Jesus Christ, Mary, each of us

Ap 11,19; 12,1-6.10; Sal 44; 1 Cor 15,20-26; Lc 1,39-56

1. Carissime sorelle e carissimi fratelli, il Signore vi dia Pace!

La solennità di Maria assunta al Cielo in anima e corpo è un richiamo al mistero pasquale che ci raggiunge nel cuore dell’estate. Infatti le letture della celebrazione e i segni che compiamo in questo giorno ci riportano all’evento fondamentale della nostra fede che è la Pasqua di Gesù. La chiave di lettura di questa festa ci è data dal brano della “Prima lettera di san Paolo ai Corinti”. È un testo che pone al centro il Cristo risorto come primizia di una creazione nuova: “Fratelli, Cristo è risorto dai morti, primizia di coloro che sono morti. Perché, se per mezzo di un uomo venne la morte, per mezzo di un uomo verrà anche la risurrezione dei morti. Come infatti in Adamo tutti muoiono, così in Cristo tutti riceveranno la vita” (1Cor 15,20-22).

Per noi l’evento centrale è e rimane sempre la risurrezione di nostro Signore Gesù Cristo.

Questo evento non è però un fatto isolato, ma una primizia, un inizio, un anticipo di ciò che Dio vuole donare all’umanità intera e a ciascuno di noi.

2. Quando contempliamo l’assunzione della beata Vergine Maria al Cielo in anima e corpo, noi contempliamo il fatto che Maria già partecipa in modo pieno e personale alla nuova creazione avviata da suo figlio Gesù con la propria risurrezione. I vangeli apocrifi della tradizione gerosolimitana e giudeo cristiana ci aiutano infatti a rileggere il mistero della morte di Maria come una partecipazione piena alla Pasqua del suo figlio Gesù. Infatti Maria dopo aver percorso come ognuno di noi il pellegrinaggio della vita si addormenta nel sonno della morte, assistita dagli Apostoli, dal Figlio e da miriadi di angeli, e secondo la tradizione Gesù porta la sua anima in Cielo, cioè la introduce nella vita divina e nella comunione con Dio.

Poi il corpo di Maria viene sepolto, e il luogo della sepoltura si trova a pochi passi da qui e lo venereremo questa sera. Nel sepolcro Maria rimane tre giorni, vegliata e venerata dagli apostoli. Il terzo giorno il corpo di Maria viene portato in Cielo dagli angeli, e riunito all’anima sotto l’albero della vita, per poter partecipare con tutta la sua persona alla Pasqua di Gesù, alla sua vittoria sulla morte, alla nuova creazione inaugurata dalla risurrezione di Gesù.

3. In questo modo Maria diventa – per usare il linguaggio dell’Apocalisse – un segno posto in Cielo per noi. Maria è un segno al quale siamo invitati a volgere il nostro sguardo per poter anche noi percorrere il pellegrinaggio della vita con il cuore pieno di speranza. Ciò che è avvenuto in Gesù come primizia, ciò che Gesù ha donato a Maria la madre sua, è esattamente ciò che il Signore desidera donare anche a tutta l’umanità, alla sua Chiesa e a ciascuno di noi. Il corpo di Gesù e il corpo di Maria sono rimasti nel sepolcro per tre giorni, il nostro corpo resterà nel sepolcro un po’ più a lungo, ma alla fine – come ci ha ricordato san Paolo – anche noi parteciperemo a questa pienezza di vita: “Come infatti in Adamo tutti muoiono, così in Cristo tutti riceveranno la vita. Ognuno però al suo posto: prima Cristo, che è la primizia; poi, alla sua venuta, quelli che sono di Cristo” (1Cor 15,22-23).

4. Nel cuore dell’estate alziamo perciò lo sguardo a questo segno pieno di consolazione e di speranza che è la Vergine Maria assunta al Cielo in anima e corpo: è un segno per l’umanità angosciata dalla paura della morte; è un segno per la Chiesa che è chiamata a partecipare pienamente alla gloria del Cristo suo Capo; è un segno che ricorda anche a ognuno di noi che non siamo destinati ad andare semplicemente verso la morte, ma attraverso la morte siamo destinati a partecipare alla nuova creazione, alla risurrezione, a vivere in Dio assieme a Gesù Risorto, alla Madre sua e a tutti i Santi del Cielo.

5. A conclusione di questa omelia desidero condividere una bella preghiera a Maria Assunta, composta dal santo papa Giovanni Paolo II (Angelus 15 agosto 1994, 1):

Oggi, nella solennità della tua Assunzione, o Maria, / volgiamo lo sguardo verso Te, / “Piena di grazia”, / Vergine che ci indichi il cielo, / la meta a cui siamo tutti incamminati.

 Ti presenti in questo giorno / come “nuova creatura”, / che, ai piedi della Croce, / quando sembrava che trionfasse la morte, / hai “creduto nell’adempimento / delle parole del Signore” (Lc 1, 45) / ed hai raccolto la promessa della resurrezione.

 Ti sentiamo vicina, / Madre dei redenti, / che insegni a superare ogni turbamento; / che conforti il popolo di Dio / nella quotidiana lotta / contro il “principe di questo mondo” (Gv 12, 31), / pronto a sradicare dai cuori / il senso di gratitudine e di rispetto / per l’originale e straordinario dono divino / che è la vita dell’uomo.

 Tu ci precedi, Vergine celeste, / nel nostro pellegrinaggio di fede. / Sostieni, o Maria, / la nostra speranza; / incoraggia la Chiesa / a proseguire sulla via della fedeltà al suo Signore, / fidando unicamente / nella potenza redentrice della santa Croce.

1. Dear Brothers and Sisters,

May the Lord give you Peace!

The solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary assumed into Heaven in body and soul is a reminder of the Paschal Mystery that reaches us in the heart of summer. In fact, the readings of the celebration and the signs we perform on this day bring us back to the fundamental event of our faith which is the Passover of Jesus. It is a text that places the risen Christ at the centre as the first fruits of a new creation: “Brothers, Christ has risen from the dead, the first fruits of those who have died. For if death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead will also come through a man. For just as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will receive life” (1 Cor 15, 20-22).

For us the central event is and always remains the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. This event, however, is not an isolated event, but a first fruit, a beginning, an anticipation of what God wants to give to the whole of humanity and to each of us.

2. When we contemplate the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven in body and soul, we contemplate the fact that Mary already participates fully and personally in the new creation initiated by her Son Jesus through His own resurrection. The apocryphal Gospels of the Jerusalemite and Judeo-Christian tradition help us to re-read the mystery of Mary's death as a full participation in the Passover of her Son Jesus. In fact, after having traveled the pilgrimage of life like each of us, she falls asleep in the sleep of death. She is assisted by the Apostles, the Son and myriads of angels, and according to tradition Jesus takes her soul to Heaven, that is, He introduces it into divine life and into communion with God.

Then Mary's body is buried, and the burial site is just a few steps from here and we will venerate it this evening. Mary remained in the tomb for three days, watched over and venerated by the Apostles. On the third day, the body of Mary is taken to Heaven by the angels, and reunited with her soul under the tree of life, in order to participate with all her person in Jesus' Passover, in His victory over death, in the new creation inaugurated by the Resurrection of Jesus.

3. In this way Mary becomes - to use the language of the Apocalypse - a sign placed in Heaven for us. Mary is a sign to which we are invited to turn our gaze so that we too can travel the pilgrimage of life with a heart full of hope. What happened to Jesus as the first fruits, what Jesus gave to Mary His mother, is exactly what the Lord wishes to give also to all humanity, to His Church and to each of us. The body of Jesus and the body of Mary remained in the tomb for three days, our body will remain in the tomb a little longer, but in the end - as St. Paul reminded us - we too will participate in this fullness of life: “Just as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will receive life. But each in place of Him: first Christ, who is the first fruits; then, when He comes, those who belong to Christ” (1 Cor 15: 22-23).

4. In the heart of summer, therefore, let us raise our gaze to this sign full of consolation and hope which is the Virgin Mary assumed into Heaven in body and soul: it is a sign for humanity distressed by the fear of death; it is a sign for the Church that is called to participate fully in the glory of Christ her Head; it is a sign that also reminds each of us that we are not destined to simply move towards death, but through death we are destined to participate in the new creation, in the Resurrection, to live in God together with the Risen Jesus, His Mother and all the Saints of Heaven.

5. At the conclusion of this homily I would like to share a beautiful prayer to Our Lady Assumed into heaven, composed by the Pope St. John Paul II (Angelus 15^th August, 1994, 1):

To-day, on the Solemnity of Your Assumption, O Mary, / we turn our gaze towards You, / "Full of grace", / Virgin who shows us the heavens, / the goal to which we are all set out.

You present Yourself on this day / as a "new creature", / who, at the foot of the Cross, / when death seemed to triumph, / You "believed in the fulfillment / of the words of the Lord" (Lk 1, 45) / and You collected the promise of the Resurrection.

We feel You close, / O Mother of the redeemed, / who teaches us to overcome every disturbance; / who comforts the people of God / in the daily struggle / against the "prince of this world" (Jn 12:31), / ready to uproot from hearts / the sense of gratitude and respect / for the original and extraordinary divine gift / which is the human life.

You precede us, Celestial Virgin, / in our pilgrimage of faith. / Support, O Mary, / our hope; / encourage the Church / to continue on the path of fidelity to the Lord, / trusting only / in the redemptive power of the Holy Cross.
