The publication of the Edict and the Letter to the whole Diocese, signed by the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, opens the diocesan phase of the process of canonization of Sister Mary of the Trinity, Poor Clare nun.
Biographical notes
Sister Mary of the Trinity (in the world, Louisa Jaques) was born on 26 April 1901 in Pretoria (present-day South Africa) and grew up in Switzerland. Her father was a Calvinist pastor and her mother died only a few hours after giving birth to her.
Weak in health, she spent her youth tormented in her body and spirit. At 25, she had a deep existential crisis which culminated in the “night of conversion”, between 13 and 14 February 1926. From then on, she felt “irresistibly attracted to the cloister.” She was baptized into the Catholic Church on 19 March 1928.
After many attempts at religious life, she entered the community of the Poor Clares in Jerusalem on 30 June 1938 with the name Mary of the Trinity. In January 1940, obeying her confessor, she started to write down her spiritual notes (the inner thoughts that the divine voice sent to her head), which were compiled in the publication “Colloquio interiore”.
On 8 December 1941 she offered herself as a victim to Jesus Eucharist, giving herself without reserve in prayer, adoration and fraternal charity. After catching typhus fever, she died on 25 June 1942 and was buried in the monastery’s cemetery.
