Musical instruments from China

8th May 2008

The Palestinian Minister of Culture summoned the Schools of Music in his Territories for an unusual encounter. The Chinese Ambassador, on behalf of his government, was to give the Schools of Music in Ramallah, Nablus, Tulkarem, Jerusalem, Bethlehem and the "Magnificat" Institute a total of 120 musical instruments.

China has decided to support the cultural development of Palestinians and in particular, the study of music, said the Ambassador.
The Palestinian Minister of Culture warmly thanked the Ambassador: The Palestinians, he said, are very open to music. Proof of this is the large number of schools of music that have opened in the pas 10 years.

It is not fair that young people who like to play an instrument, sing or dance, cannot develop their talents or are considered unbelievers as if they were doing something against God.
We Palestinians are open to music, he added, and willing to exchange our nay, a long wooden flute, for the normal orchestra flute. We don’t want anyone to shut us up in a cage, whether geographical or cultural: we are ready to accompany our young people to the academic recognition of their music studies.

Fra Armando Pierucci and the Director Hania Soudah Sabbara were present on behalf of the Magnificat Institute.
They were given two flutes and a cello.
They expressed their immense gratitude to the Chinese Ambassador and his government, as well as to the Palestinian Minister.
