The Vatican announced that Mgr. Moroun Elias Nimeh Lahham, Rector of the Latin Patriarchate Seminary of Beit Jala, has been appointed Archbishop of Tunis.
Mgr. Maroun was born in Irbid, Jordan, on 20 July 1948. He studied Philosophy (B.A. in 1968) and Theology (B.A. in 1972). He was ordained priest on 24 June 1972. After his ordination he continued to study Pastoral Theology, and was conferred with a Ph.D. in 1992.
Mgr. Maroun was assistant parish priest in Amman between 1972-1975, and in Fuhais (Jordan) between 1975-1976. He was then appointed parish priest at Dubai (UAE) between 1976-1979. Back in Amman he was assistant parish priest between 1979-1981 and then parish priest in Madaba (Jordan) between 1981-1988. He then proceeded to study Pastoral Theology at the Lateran University in Rome between 1988-1992, where he acquired his Doctorate. Between 1992-1994 he was General Director of the Latin Patriarchate Schools, and finally, since 1994, he was Rector of the Latin Patriarchate Seminary in Beit Jala.
Bishop Maroun will succeed Bishop Fouad Boutros Twal, who was Archbishop of Tunis since 1992.
The Franciscan Friars of the Custody of the Holy Land congratulate Mgr. Maroun on his appointment as Archbishop of Tunis and remember him fondly as a good friend and lecturer at the Theological Studium of the Custody in Jerusalem. They thank him particularly for his close collaboration with the Custody regarding the formation of its candidates to the priesthood.
