Coadjutor Bishop to Latin Patriarch Appointed

The Vatican announced that Mgr. Fouad Boutros Twal, Bishop of Tunis, has been appointed Coadjutor Bishop with a right of succession to His Beatitude Mgr. Michel Sabbah, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem.

Mgr. Fouad was born in Madaba, Jordan, on 23 October 1940. In 1959 he began his studies to the priesthood. He was ordained a priest in Jerusalem on 29 June 1966. Following his ordination he was assistant parish priest first at Ramallah (1966) and then at Irbid, Jordan, (1967). In 1968 he was in Ankara and became vicar at Mahatta. In 1972 he was in Rome, where he received a Licentiate in Canon Law at the Lateran University. In 1974 he was called by the Secretary of State of the Vatican. During the same year he visited the Holy Land. In October 1974 he worked at the Accademia Pontificia Ecclesiastica at Piazza della Minerva in Rome. In June 1975 he defended his doctoral dissertation regarding Processes in Bedouin Law and in Roman Law.

After his studies he travelled to the Central African Republic (1975), and worked for a short period of time at the Apostolic Nunciature of Honduras. In 1976 he was appointed charge d'affaires at the Apostolic Nunicature of Tegucigalpa, Honduras. In 1977 he was appointed Honorary Chaplain of the Holy See. In 1982 he worked at the Secretary of State of the Vatican, for the French-speaking countries of Africa. In 1985 he became Secretary of Mgr. Moretti in Cairo. In 1988 he was transferred to the Apostolic Nunciature in Bonn, and in 1990 he continued to work in the Apostolic Nuntiature in Lima, Peru.

On 12 May 1992 Mgr. Fouad Boutros was appointed Bishop Prelate of Tunis. On 22 July 1992 he was consecrated Bishop by Mgr. Michel Sabbah, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, at the College of the Brothers of the Christian Schools in Amman, Jordan. He was subsequently nominated Archbishop of Tunis in 1995. In March 2000 he visited the Holy Land on the occasion of the pastoral visit of the late Pope John Paul II.
