Vocations “come and follow me”

“The Habits of Trial”

On Monday 04th September during the celebration of the evening Vespers, we, postulants received gratefully “the habits of trial” from the hands of the Custodian of the Holy Land, Fr. Francesco Patton. Upon completion of this ceremony, we begin our preparations to begin with our new maestro of LaVerna, after departing from our fraternity in Montefalco and the new aspirants from Bethlehem who will begin their new year of their novitiate. At LaVerna we will get to know more intimately the providence of God and study to live in accordance with the franciscan charisms. All of us were overwhelmed with emotions experienced during the vestation, with the same cross-shaped habit proposed by St. Francis as a sign of a greater participation in the passion of Christ. The celebration of the Vespers was initiated with a Franciscan song “Alto e Glorioso Dio”, followed by the recitiation of the psalms, a scripture reading, from the Gospel according to Mark, on vocations and a passage from the Franciscan code, used by the first friars joining the order. The Custos later asked us, as per the rite, what inspired us to the desire of vesting the habit of trial? He then delivered an inspiring homily on vocations to the importance of consecrated life, on the necessity of following Christ and of conforming ourselves to Him who gave His life on the Cross out of love for us. After a brief moment of silence, the Custos blessed our habits and cords with holy water and then proceeded to vest each of us with the new habits. The celebration then continued with the singing of the Magnificat during which we personally recollected the many wonders and miracles He had performed in our lives. After the intercessory prayer the Custos imparted on all of us the blessing of St. Francis and with the song “Salve Sancte Pater”, we concluded the celebrations. We then continued with a few joy-filled moments congratulating each other with fraternal affectionate hugs and after the ritual photo session, we dined together.
Now we are preparing to leave this house and continue our formation together with other brothers with whom we will share this new important step in our lives within the Franciscan sanctuary of LaVerna, the place where St. Francis was conformed to Christ, poor and crucified.
