Corpus Domini at Montefalco

“I am the living bread which has come down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live forever” Jn. 6, 51

On Sunday 18 June in the town of Montefalco, was celebrated the traditional solemn procession of Corpus Christi and the Infiorata throughout the streets of the medieval town. With this, we postulants, woke up early in the morning and went up to the medieval town in order to decorate, with the parishioners of all ages, the streets of Montefalco with flower carpets, shapes, colors and many types of embellishments, were hours later would pass the procession with the Holy Sacrament. In that way, we divided in different groups and began to work in different parts of the town. The first step was to draw with chalk on the pavement, sacred images and Eucharistic symbols; after then we began to fill in the drawing with petals, powdered coffee, corn flour and colored sawdust creating colorful images, that all together formed a beautiful route that pass by remarkable locations of Montefalco. After decorating all the streets, we’ll parishioners and postulants, went to the Parish of San Bartolommeo where the Solemn Mass of the Corpus Christi started at 10.30. After the Holy Mass was finished, the procession with the Holy Sacrament began right after some minutes of Eucharistic Adoration. The parish priest, Father Vito, together with our master, fr. Antonino, led the procession carrying the Monstrance with the Corpus Christi, the body of Our Lord in the holy sacrament, throughout all the streets of Montefalco, following the route prepared for the occasion with the colorful images on the ground. In the meantime, the medieval music band of the town and the parishioners were accompanying the Holy Sacrament with chants and prayers while the priests were blessing the streets and the main landmarks of the town. Among the places visited by the Holy Sacrament, one of particular interest was the halt at the main square of Montefalco, Piazza del Comune, where the Major of the city received the blessing in name of the all citizens. Afterwards the Holy Sacrament did its visit to the two monasteries of the town, Saint Claire, of the Augustinian nuns, and Saint Leonard, of the Poor Claire nuns. After almost three hours of procession and devotional prayers of praise and glory to the Holy Sacrament, the celebration of the Corpus Christi did its return to the main parish of San Bartolommeo, where the procession arrived to its end with the chant of the Tantum Ergo and Solemn benediction for all of them who devotedly took part of the procession. Between tradition, folklore, popular piety, faith and devotion, we postulants finished the day enriched on one side, being witnesses of the fraternity created by the parishioners of Montefalco, working together for one goal, giving praise to God through beauty. On the other hand, we were nostalgic because big parts of the catholic traditions, such as the procession of the Corpus Christi, and other types of popular piety, have disappeared in our countries of origin. Nevertheless, it was a beautiful day and a beautiful memory for the posterity.
